Description

They're meant to be functional, durable, flexible, and it's all of those things," another tester said after regularly wearing the gloves for two months. "My hands have always been warm and never felt inhibited or 'clunky,' which can sometimes happen with gloves like these." We did notice during testing that those who normally like to wear additional liners or hand warmers may want to consider sizing up to give themselves more mobility. One area where the Carbide comes up a bit short is bulk. This isn’t a low-profile design by any means, and dexterity does suffer as a result. You may find yourself needing to slide them off more often than some of the pricier options like Swany's X-Cell below, and it does make it a little harder to use the touchscreen-friendly fingers. Additionally, we’ve found our Outdoor Research gloves don’t have particularly long lifespans, although there aren’t any notable areas of concern with the Carbide specifically. In fact, its tough bulk is a hallmark of the glove, and one of many reasons we have it ranked so highly here. In recent years, the brand’s products have thoroughly infiltrated American ski culture, partly due to a partnership with high-profile American skier Cody Townsend. The stark white leather of Hestra has become synonymous with ski town living and “ skid“ culture. Once you’ve found the perfect pair of ski gloves, you’ll also need to make sure the sizing and cut suits you. A too-tight fit can cut off blood circulation, while a too-loose fit will compromise warmth and add bulk. These have earned a reputation for warmth and durability, which is why they’re trusted by mountain guides and outdoor professionals the world over. If you need to crank up the heat even further, Hestra offers a wool glove liner or mitten liner (sold separately) that brings these very close to the warmth of the Army Leather Extreme mitten.

The Wakayama gloves let you flash some old school style without having to resort to your vintage onesie. The glove is perfect for mild days, as the leather shell is mated to a wool terry lining, adding a bit more warmth than you’d expect from a non-insulated option. The mitten gets beefed up with PrimaLoft® Gold synthetic insulation, making it better suited to mid-season use. path d="M5 8.975L3.146 10 3.5 7.83 2 6.291l2.073-.317L5 4l.927 1.975L8 6.292 6.5 7.829 to or subtracted from your starting length. You won't find a more economical glove option than the Kincos, and this system works surprisingly well if the conditions aren't too cold or wet. It's best to step up to a more waterproof design in the wet snow of the Pacific Northwest, but the gloves are a great match for areas with dry snow like Colorado and Utah. Don't forget to grab a PBR at the lodge to complete your get-up, and per tradition, retire them at the end of the season and repeat. A final alternative is the 3-finger glove (also called a trigger or split-finger glove), which attempts to bring together the attributes of glove and mitten designs. In these gloves, the pointer finger and thumb have their own slots while your remaining fingers huddle together for warmth. We don’t often recommend this style (the Oyuki Pep GTX Trigger Mitt above is one exception) because we've found that freeing up your pointer finger isn’t a huge difference maker for dexterity, and that finger ends up just as cold as it would be in a standard glove. In this case, it doesn’t truly amount to the best of both worlds. The Oyuki Pep 3-finger gloves offer a nice combination of warmth and dexterity Materials: Leather vs. SyntheticGloves that are waterproof and breathable get those properties from a membrane that's sandwiched between the shell and the liner of the glove. Even the most breathable waterproof gloves will hold in more sweat than gloves without a membrane. If you’re on the fence between a glove and a mitten, it’s worth looking into a trigger mitt (also known as a three-finger mitt or lobster mitt). On paper, this concept is the best of both worlds: By combining a mitten with a dedicated slot for your pointer finger, you get more thermal efficiency than a standard glove while retaining enough dexterity to pinch a zipper, fiddle with your bindings, or even send a text. Downsides are that your pointer finger ends up being just as cold as it would be in a glove, and freedom of movement still falls short of a regular five-finger design. But trigger mitts nevertheless provide a nice middle ground of warmth and dexterity, and we think Oyuki’s Pep pulls it off better than most. The three-finger design has separate compartments for the thumb and first finger, while the middle, ring, and pinky fingers are housed together mitten-style. The liner, which is made from Hestra’s proprietary G-Loft insulation, looks like a standard glove and has five separate fingers. The Fall Line is a great glove in so many ways, though offering a high amount of warmth isn't one of those ways. We see this as a positive in the sense that maybe extreme warmth is not what you're after, or a negative, as they are bomber, but on the thinner side of the spectrum, offering less insulation than many of the contenders in our review. Don't get us wrong; these gloves still offer warmth, and we were comfortable when wearing them in 10-15F temperatures. If these temperatures sound ideal to you, and dexterity and durability are what you're looking for, the Fall Line's level of warmth might be perfect. Overall, I’m a big fan of these gloves and have detected very few flaws. The wine-colored pigment bled slightly when the gloves got wet.

Again all measurements are in inches. NOTE THESE ARE A ROUGH GUIDE ONLY AND NOT SPECIFIC TO A PARTICULAR BRAND! Size For days when no amount of insulation will keep you warm, the Power Heater adds rechargeable battery-powered hand warmers to the equation. The goat leather palm is incredibly rugged, while the Flextron 4-way stretch softshell is flexible enough to give this burly glove an easy grip on ski poles. If you struggle with cold hands or you need gloves for frigid weather, look for the warmest glove you can get your hands on. However, if you’re looking for an everyday ski or snowboard glove, it’s possible to be too warm, particularly on spring days. Casual use can span the entire spectrum. Of course, your personal tolerance for cold makes a big difference. For high altitude environments that tend to be cold and dry, a weather-resistant glove without a membrane can actually be the best tool for the job. If you’re mountaineering, ice flows and unpredictable weather make a waterproof-breathable membrane essential. The same goes for spring conditions and lower altitudes where slush and wet snow are a constant factor. Dexterity The combination of soft deerskin leather and lambskin lining, plus some tasteful details, give these gloves a luxurious feel that’s great for milder days. The handcrafted quality ensures that they’re built to last a lifetime. There were several gloves we tested that almost made our list but ultimately fell short. Still, you may find some of their unique features worth consideration. Many skiers and boarders struggle to decide between gloves and mittens. Gloves own the dexterity crown, but mittens reign supreme on the warmth front. Lobster-style mitts, or three-finger gloves, are an attempt at uniting the best of both worlds. We don’t love every pair of glove-mitten hybrids on the market, but Hestra simply nailed it with the Fall Line.
