Description

The Wild Robot Escapes is the story of a robot torn between two worlds. Roz was designed for her new life. She was designed to work alongside humans and robots and to live in the civilized world. But her computer brain is filled with perfect memories of her old life on the island. She grows to care about the new characters she meets, but she misses her old friends and her son and her home. And so our robot must discover for herself where she truly belongs. The following version of this book was used to create this lesson plan: Brown, Peter. The Wild Robot Escapes. Little, Brown and Company. 2018. Hardcover. Ahoy there me mateys! I fell in love with Roz in the first book, the wild robot. While I try to post no spoilers, if ye haven’t read the first book then ye might want to skip this post. If ye keep reading this log then ye have been forewarned and continue at yer own peril . . . Of course, the book is also illustrated. I loved the art in the previous book, and I loved it in this one. The style just fits perfect with the writing style. A] stellar sequel… Warmth and gentleness court through the novel, even as dangers emerge.”― Booklist, starred review

As we know, families come in all forms. Now that Roz has taken on the role of a mother to Brightbill, they have become like a little family. In what ways do they act like your family acts? In what ways are they different from any of the families that you know? The chapters varied in size, some were really short, others were long. I quite liked that the author did it this way, it made it all just a bit more fun and engaging to read. Aren't we all a little broken and need the loving kindness of others from time to time, a gentle word here and there as a reminder that we matter to someone else? I know I do. Roz is like a mother to many of the island’s animals, and she takes on the role of mother to a Brightbill, whose goose egg was the only survivor of a terrible accident. What do you think motherly actions look like? In what ways does Roz act motherly? Provide examples from the text. The author, Peter Brown, has incorporated all types of technology and scientific terminology into The Wild Robot. Examine these with your group to determine what is real, and what isn’t quite real. What are some technological advances that he didn’t include in the story? How would you have included more?

Sequel to 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown, so I can't say too much that might reveal things about the first book, but... croak, “Where are you? I can’t see you!” And then another would reply, “I’m over here! Follow my voice!” When Roz first stomped across the island, the animal squawks and growls and chirps had sounded like nothing more than meaningless noises. But she no longer heard animal noises. Now she heard animal words. To contrast the wilderness of the first book, I wanted Roz to now experience as much of the civilized world as possible. I wanted her to experience cities and towns and rural areas. I wanted human characters and robot characters and domestic animal characters. And there would have to be futuristic technology: computers and machines and vehicles. As I thought about the future, I asked myself more questions: For Groups: Divide the chapters of the book amongst your group members. Each member of the group creates a storyboard for their assigned chapter. This can be done as a collaborative project, or separately for longer novels. The outline had 90 plot points, and I developed each one into its own chapter, so the book has 90 short chapters She misses her animal friends and her adopted son (a little gosling) but she's realistic, her robot body is battered and dented. This one seemed a little less 'shiny' than the first one and it took a while longer to engage with the story. It was at the end of chapter 8 when I read the words, "And in a single night, Roz became a farmer," that I settled in and felt engaged.
