I’ve chosen a simple recipe to share with you today — not that any are particularly complicated, I should tell you — and it’s the gentle and very lovely Creamy Milk and Roast Garlic Soup, which I’ve already made twice! I feel you need it in your life, too. I’ ve always taken an interest in food, as it was such a big part of my family life – my parents had a farm, and each morning they would go to collect the produce that we would then eat at home. The smell of a fresh tomato...nothing like it! I’m from a small town in rural Spain, so food is a huge part of our culture. I’m not sure I was a great help, but the first dish I remember ‘helping’ with is lentil stew – my mum would let them cook for what seemed like days & I think I was allowed to stir every now & again!" Dark terracotta floors combined with natural stone cladding on beams and columns gives this large kitchen a antique and rustic feel with its choice of colors and textures. This is even enhanced with the weathered finish of the wood beams and the paint on the walls. The kitchen cabinets on the other hand, is a combination of natural fruitwood cabinets topped with white granite, and white antique finish topped with light gray granite. This finishes gives the space a natural weathered finish, making it look aged and adding more personality to the space. Hexagonal terracotta tiles, combined with orange walls and wood solid teak wood slats for the ceiling, gives this large kitchen area a warm ambiance. However, instead of applying a more traditional wood finish/stain on the kitchen cabinets, this one uses emerald green finish on its paneled wood cabinets and tops it with white granite. The cool tole of the green cabinets is a pleasing complement to the warm-colored walls, making it stand-out. From nostalgic childhood favourites that his mother fed the family, to more modern recipes with his Spanish twist, there’s a recipe here for everyone.José Pizarro grew up in central-western Spain, in the tiny village of Talaván. His family had been farmers for generations and he spent his childhood on his parent’s farm, helping his father produce vegetables, dairy products and different meats. Life in this small village centred on dinner, with great recipes passed from generation to generation through his grandmother, to his mother, and now him. I have come late to a proper appreciation of Spanish food. Most of my European eating, since I was in my teens, has been focussed on Italy, and I have never really got to know Spain in any depth first hand. But I have, more recently, been educating myself deliciously through Nieves Barragán Mohacho’s and José Pizarro’s breathtaking food here in London, and find myself Iberically inspired! So I was primed, perhaps, to greet The Spanish Home Kitchen with keen curiosity and enthusiasm. But even without any particular interest, I do believe this is a book that would have wowed me anyway: it’s full of food that I want to eat, have to cook, and makes me happy just to think about. Quite simply, I love it. I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t. Recipes include: Shoulder of Iberico Pork in Rich Tomato Sauce with Zesty Couscous; Migas with Fried Egg, Chorizo and Bacon; Seared Squid with Caramelised Fennel and Onions and Lemon and Parsley Dressing; Cherries in Aguardiente Syrup with Pistachio Ice Cream. There is no doubt that in many homes, the kitchen is the most popular spot where you not only cook and dine but also hang out. So it makes sense you want your cooking space to feel incredibly warm and inviting. Enter Spanish style kitchens. From architectural details to colorful tiles, rooms like these combine Old World style with contemporary features to create irresistible spaces that feel both stylish and lived-in.
