Omi reveals to the family what is happening—they are being tormented by Krampus, an ancient demonic spirit that punishes those who are bad at Christmas, referring to him as the "shadow of Saint Nicholas". Omi admits that when she was young, the selfish nature of her village residents and her family's poverty and their own unruly behaviour in the aftermath of World War II caused her to lose her love of the holidays as she, like Max, wished her parents to disappear, which summoned Krampus and resulted in her parents, and town being dragged into hell. She alone was spared by the demon, who left behind a bauble with his name inscribed and her life as a reminder of what happens when one loses their Christmas spirit ("Like he had for thousands of years, Krampus came not to reward, but to punish. Not to give, but to take.") Howard, however, dismisses Omi's tale and attempts to go after Howie Jr. but he encounters several demonic creatures lurking around the yard and Howie seemingly encased into a snowman. Max suddenly awakens in his bed on Christmas morning. He looks out his window and sees that the neighborhood has returned to normal, and finds his presents under the tree and his family appears. Believing that the entire experience had been a dream, he opens a present and discovers the Krampus bauble and the family falls silent and remembers what happened as the scene pans out to reveal them being seen through a snow globe in Krampus' lair. Despite his dark and terrifying nature, Krampus does have a sense of nobility and can be merciful; if those he punishes and torments repent for their mischief and regain their Christmas spirit, he lets them off and will even reverse the damage he did, though he does leave them with a stern warning that he will be watching them.In the aftermath of the 1932 election in Austria, the Krampus tradition was prohibited by the Dollfuss regime [11] under the clerical fascist Fatherland Front ( Vaterländische Front) and the Christian Social Party. Upon arriving home, Tom and Howard try to calm the family, saying they will board up the doors and windows and have a camp out in the living room. Tom's Austrian mother by the name of Omi warns Tom to keep the fire in the fireplace going. However, Howard falls asleep while he is keeping watch, and the fire goes out. Krampus lowers a hook with one of his minions, a living gingerbread man, which captures Howie Jr., despite the rest of the family trying to save them. During this, they accidentally light their Christmas tree on fire. Following this, Omi tells the rest of the family her knowledge on Krampus: Nakamura, Reid (February 24, 2016). [5] [6] [7] Origins [ edit ] A person dressed as Krampus at Morzger Pass, Salzburg, Austria It started with the wind, on a cold Winter night, much like this. It was almost Christmas, but this Christmas was darker, less cheerful. But I still believed in Santa, in magic and miracles, and the hope that we could find joy again. But our village had given up on miracles, and on each other. They had forgotten the spirit of Christmas, the sacrifice of giving, and my family was no different. I tried to help them to believe again, but we were no longer the loving family I remembered. They too had given up. And eventually, so did I. And for the first time, I didn't wish for a miracle. I wished for them to go away. A wish I would come to regret. And that night, in the darkness of a howling blizzard... I got my wish. I knew Saint Nicholas was not coming this year. Instead, it was a much darker, more ancient spirit. The shadow of Saint Nicholas. It was... Krampus. And as he had for thousands of years, Krampus came not to reward, but to punish, not to give, but to take. He, and his helpers. I could only listen as they dragged my family into the underworld, knowing that I would be next. But Krampus did not take me that night. He left me, as a reminder of what happens when hope is lost, when belief is forgotten, and the Christmas spirit...dies. Released in 2015 by Legendary Pictures and Universal, and Directed by Michael Dougherty; Krampus is a Christmas themed horror film based on the folklore legend of Krampus. Personally I never heard of the character of Krampus until this film came out. According to Wikipedia:
