Before I move on I did want to talk a bit about the rules. This is a full-on traditional RPG and the rules have a lot of text in them. That text is presented in a two-column layout with lots of white space. The rules are intermixed with some great-looking artwork and feature a ton of call-outs, tips and examples. Overall the layout was expertly designed and I really liked the amount of game advice that was about how to play and not just mechanics. The elegantly simple rules system puts the emphasis on storytelling and supports a setting and characters that players are familiar with andlove from the start. In this hometown, magical kitties don’t have to hide their powers while they’re helping to solve Princess Problems. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, you are a magical kitty who owns a human. (Some humans believe that they own the kitties… This is clearly ridiculous.) Your human has a Problem, and you need to use your magical powers to solve their Problems and save the day! This system cheat sheet, like the others I’ve posted here at the Alexandrian, neatly summarizes all of the rules from the game — from basic action resolution to the mechanics for foes and disasters. It won’t teach you how to create a character, but it’s a great way to get a grip on a new system and, of course, extremely valuable during actual play for introducing new players to the game. Every Magical Kitty has a human. Every human has a Problem. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, you need to use your magical powers to solve problems and save the day!You are Cute. You are Cunning. You are Fierce. You are Magical Kitties, and it’s time to Save the Day! The last thing that your Kitty Krew can earn is to improve your Human’s or Hometown’s Problems. If you worked to solve a problem the GM can reduce the rank of that problem by one (or more for really epic stories).

Second, we wanted the game to only use six-sided dice. I’m a big fan of the polyhedrons, but limiting the dice to just one type would (a) allow us to provide dice in the boxed set for a relatively low cost (so we could invest more in other features) and (b) provide a more familiar experience to players in our core target audience six to twelve year-olds. The second half of the Rulebook includes information mainly meant for the Games Master, though it doesn’t restrict this section to GM’s eyes only like some traditional RPGs do. You are cute. That’s how this RPG in a box begins, and also how it has continued – such a cute mantra has now invaded daily life and has been repeated regularly since starting to play this game. Gone away are the range of dice, the requirement to roll for an extensive number of options, and lengthy character sheets, instead, here stands Magical Kitties Save The Day, with six D6, and requirements to roll only for actions that fall under cute, cunning, or fierce. The premise is simple, you’re a magical kitten who has a human with a problem, and you’re going to try to help them with that problem. Added to that, is underlying other issues – a mouse rebellion? Baba Yaga? Dinosaurs? These make it just as bonkers as you’d like to play it. Our most recent game of it included a kitten skilled at dancing, fighting prankster mice headed by Remy, over underappreciated restaurant level food, in a dance off that involved mostly TikTok songs, after having bribed elderly cats for information using Werther’s Originals stolen from a corner shop. Filtering actions into cute, cunning, and fierce for these (as an example), worked surprisingly well, though the temptation to ask for perception rolls was equally surprisingly high.Roll a dice pool to do something difficult. Each die that rolls at or above the gamemaster’s difficulty is a success. The number of successes you roll determines the outcome and drives the story forward in unexpected and exciting ways. The first edition of Magical Kitties Save the Day featured eighteen Magical Powers for the kitties. For the second edition, I wanted to expand this to thirty-six powers. You are magical kitties. You have humans. The humans have problems. Use your magical powers to solve their problems and save the day! Despite only having the standard edition of Magical Kitties Save the Day I am very impressed by this game. It does a lot of things right and I think it’s a fantastic game for playing with kids. I also think the theme is going to appeal to some adult gamers and I’m pleased to say that I think there’s enough meat here to keep gamers of all experience levels interested.
