One on side of its mouth you On the Town: Saturday evenings in the summertime, “enjoy the best bluegrass on the east coast at Shindig on the Green,” says Boeger. He has a degree in History from Manchester University, and his work is regularly featured in global media including the BBC, Condé Nast Traveller, The Guardian, The Times, and The Sunday Times. It begins at Malham Tarn in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales but soon disappears underground thanks to the permeable limestone that covers the area. Marlene Chamberlain of Booklist concluded that "This is a colorful memoir from a Peace Corps volunteer who came away with more understanding of the Chinese than any foreign traveler has a right to expect." St Goar Germany Guide: Top Things To See And Do [2023]

In the 17th century, plaice was heavily fished in the River Rhône, and nets were installed at the foot of the tower of Philip IV downstream of the water mills which ground flour. Fish were attracted by flour which had fallen from the mills, providing a plentiful catch. This river is the third longest river in the UK. Rising on Biddulph Moor in Staffordshire, it meanders through the Midlands before emptying out between Hull and Immingham on the North Sea coast. Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence It’s so cool to see a giant lake freighter one minute and paddle boarders or a rowing club go by a few minutes later!”The journey takes less than five minutes. You pay as you board. Cars cost €5.30, adults €1.70 and children 6-14 €1. The ferries run from 5.30 am to 9.00 pm daily, with slightly later starts on weekend days. Travellers used to buy the nougat on their way to the south of France, as the city is both next to the Rhône and to the primary route the N7. Since the construction of the A7 highway, however, many nougat factories have been forced to close as tourists no longer stop in the city. It’s ideal for people who like outdoor activities. A beautiful hiking path, the Two Moors Way, follows the river for a while but if you are a bit more adventurous, you could sign up for a whitewater kayaking tour as the river has some challenging rapids. In the heart of China's Sichuan province lies the small city of Fuling. Surrounded by the terraced hills of the Yangtze River valley, Fuling has long been a place of continuity, far from the bustling political centers of Beijing and Shanghai. But now Fuling is heading down a new path, and gradually, along with scores of other towns in this vast and ever-evolving country, it is becoming a place of change and vitality, tension and reform, disruption and growth. As the people of Fuling hold on to the China they know, they are also opening up and struggling to adapt to a world in which their fate is uncertain. This summer, we asked our supporters to share their favorite river towns. And we were thrilled with the enthusiastic response! We asked you to consider factors including conservation actions, clean water and river health, access, recreation, culture and history. And you spoke up passionately – thank you for sharing your stories.

Rivers: The 20 Most Breathtakingly Gorgeous England Rivers: The 20 Most Breathtakingly Gorgeous

The smaller Rhine river towns are better places to stay than Koblenz, giving you much more of a convivial feel than the larger city. Tip– Take a boat trip along the Rhine from Rüdesheim, taking in some of the best Rhine River Castles. They usually go as far as Rheinstein Castle, one of the earliest Rhine Castles to be restored during the Romantic Revival of the 1820s.This river flows through Dartmoor in Devon (again, in the West Country). Navigable as far inland as Totnes, sections of the river upstream are popular with canoeists and kayakers. Try To See– Schloss Stolzenfels is the white wedding cake chateau on the left bank of the Rhine, a few miles south of Koblenz. The Ouse has many tributaries, among them the Aire, Don, Wharfe, Swale, Nidd and Foss, draining a large area of upland and therefore making it prone to severe flooding. Sustainable living is rife here, not just a fad – after all it’s where the Centre for Alternative Technology was established in the 1970s, in an old slate quarry. Hopefully its courses and exhibitions will resume shortly. Nature lovers will want to visit the RSPB Ynys-hir nature reserve and get the binocs out to spy migrating ospreys returning to the Cors Dyfi nature reserve.

River Town | Peter Hessler

Further downstream Dartmouth Harbour is crammed with fishing boats, yachts and vessels of all kinds. The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place annually in August. Try to see– If you have time, it’s worth seeking out some of the viewpoints around Bingen. The Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm, south of Burg Klopp, is the highest. And the Prinzenkopf and Elisenhohe viewpoints are just to the west of the town. Who would believe that the city of cigarettes would become the city of mountain-bike trails and triathlons?” asks Ralph White, manager of the James River Park System. We're hiking to the James River, mere minutes from downtown, under an overstory of sweet gum and sycamore. Inner-tubers, snorkelers, fishermen, and sunbathers use this trail to access a beautiful stretch of the fall-line river, which for more than a century held the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted waterways in the country. “Nobody wears a noseclip anymore,” White says. “When I first got here, all the boaters wore them. Not now.” If you’re driving, St Goar is on the B9 road that runs alongside the river from Koblenz to Bingen. The A61 autobahn (motorway) also passes nearby.

St Goar has a long history as a busy Rhine river port, and this is humorously commemorated in a tiny passageway – the Schissengasse – off main street Heerstrasse. Apparently the port was so busy that the workers didn’t even have time for toilet breaks. Nature nonetheless had to take its course, so the workers – known as Rampenschisser – would do their business (number two) on the riverbank. St Goar is on the left bank of the River Rhine, 35 km (22 miles) south of Koblenz and 25 km (15 miles) north of Bingen. Fuling's position at the crossroads came into remarkably sharp focus when Peter Hessler arrived as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1996, marking the first time in more than half a century that the city had an American resident. He found himself teaching English and American literature at the local college, discovering how Shakespeare and other classics look when seen through the eyes of students who have been raised in the Sichuan countryside and educated in Communist Party doctrine. His students, though, are the ones who taught him about the ways of Fuling -- and about the complex process of understanding that takes place when one is immersed in a radically different society.
