The author does well to capture the villainy of some of the characters too: I definitely saw one of the characters as a Vernon Dursley type from HP and it was so easy to despise him!

Pandora: The instant no.1 Sunday Times bestseller

When her samples are rejected yet again, Dora decides to investigate the contents of the basement Hezekiah keeps firmly locked, amazed to find a beautiful Greek vase – a pithos – the perfect material on which to base a new set of designs to please a fickle public. Smith takes this story into modern-day Inverness in the guise of Anthea and Robin, and deals with gender, transformation and acceptance of self. Tak jak ogromnie urzekł mnie jej klimat, tak uważam, że portrety bohaterów mogłoby być dużo lepiej rozwinięte i przedstawione, a sama fabuła dużo płynniejsza. From the Sunday Times bestselling author comes a gripping tale of obsession, superstition and ambition, set against the atmospheric backdrop of Victorian London. A trail of mysteries runs through the narrative, not least the identity of the white-haired man who makes an occasional appearance and whether the pithos is cursed. Overall, the pure majesty and utterly absorbing quality of the writing makes this book enjoyable, even if the execution of the plot does leave one or two things to be desired.

An arresting novel in verse which brings the Greek monster Geryon (who features in the 10th Labour of Heracles) into a modern-day setting. I did find the story to drag now and then and it was a bit predictable with the romance and who's good and who's bad.It is the story of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, beginning with the brutal sacrifice of their 16-year-old daughter, Iphigenia. An epic work in its own right, the novel is divided into episodes that roughly correspond to those in the original poem. Luckily, she has her friend Edward to keep an eye on her, although he seems to have an ulterior motive. with its atmospheric and colourful evocation of life a couple of centuries ago, and its variety of characters like evil uncle Hezekiah, blowsy housekeeper Lottie, the salty Coombe brothers who work covertly for Hezekiah, and snobby entitled Lady Latimer.

Drawing on surviving fragments of the lyric poet Stesichorus’s work Geryoneis, this is a moving coming-of-age tale about love and yearning which is whimsical, sad, and a fascinating take on a character overlooked in favour of the larger-than-life man who slayed him. The goods Hezekiah sells are mostly forgeries or items obtained illegally, and Dora spends much of her time in her attic room feeling unloved with only her pet magpie Hermes for company, harbouring aspirations to be a renowned jewellery designer. Even though I went into this novel hopeful, I have to confess that I didn’t have very high expectations. What are your thoughts about women and agency in the Georgian period, and how well did the author represent them in Pandora? The author drops hints throughout the novel and while there was no huge twist at the end, I really enjoyed the story. If this book had a more fully fledged plot to go with its immense artistic merit and extraordinary writing style, then it would be an absolute masterpiece. The relationship and backstory between Edward and his complex friend and benefactor and the development of his relationship was really the heart of the story for me - and the mythological touches were added special detail. Susan Stokes-Chapman’s atmospheric debut, Pandora , immerses the reader in the dangerous, mysterious world of ancient antiquities with prose that is elegant and teeming with visceral sensory detail.
