Description

The frame itself pulls from locations in Kamigawa where bright, neon glow can be found everywhere," said Daniel. "We wanted a blending of old and new, just like real-world Japan, so we have this neon paired with more traditional torii gate design on the title bar, a subtle nod to the Champions of Kamigawa set symbol as well." There are no cards in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty that are exclusive to Japanese product. Aside from neon ink Hidetsugu—which is English only—you can open every Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty card in boosters of every language. In Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, we're using foil etching to emphasize Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's other showcase frames. Twelve cards were carefully curated to receive the foil-etched treatment. There are one rare and four mythic rare foil-etched cards in the soft glow frame, one rare and two mythic rare foil-etched cards in the Ninja frame, one rare and one mythic rare foil-etched cards in the Samurai frame, and two foil-etched mythic rares in the Phyrexian frame. You'll be able to open them exclusively in Collector Boosters. Set boosters have 12 cards, and there’s a guaranteed rare or mythic card. Every set booster also has a foil card.

We wanted to use a print treatment to enhance the theme of this set," said Senior Creative Art Director Lisa Hanson, who oversaw print treatments. "Neon ink was an obvious choice. We spent some time trying out different ways to incorporate neon ink into the frame and art before landing on the final treatment. The artist selection for this was very important," said Tom. "You'll see that many of these artists have done work for Magic already. This is also a nice nod to the traditional Kamigawa, something that is prevalent throughout the set—albeit neon lit now. We also wanted these to be typeset in Japanese only, adding the authentic quality." Soft Glow Treatment Each set usually comes with five different theme boosters, either by color or color combo if there’s a clear theme for them. Both Crimson Vow and Midnight Hunt broke that mold a little bit by releasing five mono-colored boosters and a 5-colored booster of the set’s main tribe ( vampires and werewolves respectively), and Kamigawa is following in their footsteps with a 5-colored ninja theme booster. They were popular with many of the players (art fans, story fans, collectors, etc.), so we've decided to have them return. Zendikar Rising Set Boosters will have 81 different art cards ( Modern Horizons, in contrast, had 54). As I explained above, we want every slot to have the potential for excitement, so here's what we've done with the art cards. Five percent of the time, rather than a normal art card, you'll get one with a gold-stamped signature of the artist. Every art card exists in both its normal version and its signature version. Art is a big part of what makes Magic such a fun game, so we're happy to have this opportunity to celebrate our amazing art and artists. It also adds another collectible to the game (and history shows us we have a lot of players who love collecting things). Every rare and mythic rare in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty has an alternate version. You can find most of those cards in the soft glow treatment inspired by a futuristic neon aesthetic:

For example, take the Magic booster. For decades, there was only one version, and it was the only conduit into a new set. No matter what type of player you were or what you cared about, you had to enter each new set through the same booster as every other player. (This is the booster we now call the Draft Booster.) The problem with this method is that it means that any restriction for one group becomes a restriction for everyone. For instance, drafting is a big part of Magic. A lot of decisions about how a booster is put together are affected by how it will draft. So, no matter whether you drafted or not, you were affected by those choices, even if those choices were not ones that made the booster experience better for you. Several years ago, this led us to ask the question, "Are there different types of boosters we could make that would excite a different audience than what our normal Draft Booster is aimed at?"

One of the big shifts in R&D's thinking in recent years is the idea of adapting our products to the audience rather than making the audience adapt to our products. That is, we have to figure out who is buying our game and what it is they want and then make products which can meet those needs. The target audience for these boosters are the new players, who just want to get as many cards in a single color as possible, and don’t care much about their rarity. Neon Dynasty Bundle Kamigawa‘s story starts when Kaito unexpectedly meets the emperor herself, and then a man with a metal arm changes both their lives forever: Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh. On his journey to find answers, Kaito encounters a Phyrexian monster as well as another planeswalker. We've wanted to use ukiyo-e style for a while but knew Kamigawa was the perfect spot," said Creative Manager Tom Jenkot. Compleated is a brand-new mechanic introduced with Kamigawa. It's only featured on planeswalkers and uses Phyrexian hybrid mana to get up to some shenanigans.Today, I'm going to talk about something we're premiering in Zendikar Rising—a brand-new type of booster. If the title didn't already give it away, it's called a Set Booster, and in today's column, I'm going to talk all about it. If you’re looking to expand your collection with rares/mythics from the new set and get staples for Constructed play, then the set booster is the best booster, and the most budget-friendly one. But if you want to spin the lottery wheel, have a chance to find a premium card from the newest set, or just get prettier foil versions of the cards from a given set, then collector boosters are the way to go! At least 1 rare or mythic rare card (approximately 27% of Set Boosters contain 2 rares or mythic rares, 3% contain 3, and less than 1% contain 4.)
