Able to take the bus on her own, it gave me peace of mine as the lanyard lay under her coat visible when presented on the bus, not readily visible. I hoped a 'thinking'/observant person in the case of an emergency may search for or see it. Sunflower lanyards are available to collect from both our hospitals. You do not have to meet certain criteria to access a lanyard and we do not exclude people who have yet to be diagnosed. Royal Brompton Hospital

Should you travel with dementia?

Sainsbury’s has been the first supermarket to trial the scheme with 40 stores. Tesco is also trialling the scheme in 15 Hertfordshire stores. Representatives for the airline did not immediately respond to requests for comment on any changes to accommodate travelers with cognitive impairment. Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast City and Bristol had all stated in 2016 that either representatives from the airport or small selections of staff had attended Dementia Friends talks or focus groups with charities to establish what they need to implement to better their services. Today, they’ve all implemented a lanyard scheme, with Glasgow becoming the first UK airport to host a virtual dementia tour to help staff and other passengers understand the struggles. They’re also working with Alzheimer Scotland to raise awareness for Dementia. In a Facebook post, she said: “I love that it is not labelling anyone but it just makes people more aware that it may be why that person is struggling.” We know there are lots of benefits to a holiday, such as having new experiences and giving the person with dementia and those close to them a break from routine.

If a person with dementia wants a discreet way to let others know about their diagnosis while out and about, we have free helpcards available.

From the Motability Scheme

I have also made my husband a card that is attached to the lanyard which tells people what he has. I did this purely because so many people DON'T know about the lanyard and what it symbolises.!!. My friends who are nurses, some doctors and consultants are not aware either. It really makes me cross. Now in 2019, it is being successfully introduced to several major UK airports, supermarkets, railway stations and sports venues. People who wear the lanyard can also choose to give additional information if they don’t feel comfortable talking to people about their disability. Wearers can attach an ID card to the end of their lanyard with details about their condition and the support they may need. When was the sunflower lanyard introduced?

That does not have to be the case because life does not have to end when dementia begins. That’s why they are working with airports across the country, so people with dementia can continue to do the things they enjoy after a diagnosis Write a list of everything you are taking with you in your luggage, and everything the person with dementia is taking with them. If you need to find items, the list can be a helpful reminder of who has what. You can also complete the card that comes with the lanyard which will help others to understand your needs. If you unable to talk to one of our staff members, writing down the type of help you will need and handing it to our staff will help us to support you. They then handcuffed her using two sets of handcuffs. Grahame, who was in distress, howled and cried out: “Ow! Help!”

All staff in customr facing roles have been trained in awareness and as well as the lanyard scheme they operate, they also issue discreet hidden disability cards 🌻 Next up, Luton announced that as part of their 2016 commitments, they would have at least 40% of the airport staff undergo Dementia Friends training by the end of the year… By 2021, we can now see that they are working to become a Dementia Friendly airport and also have a lanyard scheme.
