If you enjoy books drenched in suspense with characters you can never quite be certain of, you're going to love reading The Skeleton Key. I found that to be true—even though the novel wasn't as bookish as I'd hoped when I began reading. MY THOUGHTS: I became fully immersed in the story of the Churcher and Lally families to the detriment of everything else I was currently reading. The extended family dynamics enthralled me. Anyway, all this has started up again as they've decided to make an app and create another treasure hunt, but on the date of the release, a real bone is found in the place that they've hidden the last golden bone from the previous skeleton (a pelvis). This digs up the past for Nell in a very unpleasant way, which also happens to threaten the safety of her foster child. Also complicating things are the many, many characters in Nell's family, all of whom cause a lot of drama, especially her parents and their "best friends" who live next door to them. Her parents' past histories and all of their drama is a significant part of the story. Ben Bunsen conjures up his imaginary friend (a friendly little ball of fur) so well that it becomes an "unimaginary". But rambunctious Mr Skeleton Keys is adamant that Gorblimey is dangerous, and wants to banish him to oblivion using one of his five key-fingers that open doors to otherworldly domains. The illustrations are glorious: the perfect balance of cute and creepy. There are snippets of them throughout the story too, making it feel an extra-special and spooky tale. It's very difficult to review such a multi-layered, well-plotted mystery without giving anything away, Let’s just say that it’s a story about fame, greed and family secrets. A LOT of dark family secrets. As an added bonus, the book also contained two of my favourite themes: a story based on an old legend, plus a “book within a book”. The audio book was read beautifully and the characterisation (especially Skeleton Keys himself) was an absolute hoot. The reader did a great job all round. I was impressed by him. And as I said above, the family is messy. Messy and toxic and precious and pretentious and each and every one of them needed to go. I sit here now crossing my extraordinary kneecaps… I can see them better thanks to Switek’s keys.”—Rose George, The New York Times Book ReviewThe plot of this one is pretty complicated (one of my complaints), but the basic premise is that there is a children's book (based on a real book the author loves as a child) that left clues for readers to find treasure in real life (in this case a tiny golden skeleton split up into sections), and people became obsessed with it, making its author and illustrator a very rich man. It also painted a target on his daughter, who he named after the character in the book whose skeleton all the treasure hunters were looking to find. A large part of this book is Eleanor (who goes by Nell) dealing with the fallout from obsessive unhealthy fandom. Familien til Ben flytter fra et sted til et annet hvert år. Da er det naturligvis vanskelig for Ben å få seg venner, men nå fyller Ben år og han har selvsagt invitert alle barna i landsbyen til bursdagsfest. Dessverre er det ikke noen som møter opp. Ingen kommer i bursdagsselskapet! Ben blir selvfølgelig kjempelei seg, men han har i hvert fall Gorblimey, fantasivennen sin. Gorblimey er trofast, hans bestevenn og vil aldri svikte ham. Plutselig viser det seg at fantasien blir virkelig og Gorblimey står rett foran ham, i levende live! I tillegg møter Ben en annen rar figur, Skeleton Keys, som egentlig er fortelleren av denne boka, og herr Keys mener at Gorblimey er et livsfarlig monster. Skeleton Keys er et ganske dandy skjelett, og har i likhet med Bens venn vært en fantasivenn, men nå åpner han dører med sine nøkkelfingre. But as Ben battles to save his new friend from Oblivion, the Gorblimey is soon the least of Skeleton Keys’ worries. For strange things happen when imaginations run wild and it seems that there’s more than one unimaginary in town. The two CIA agents reluctantly reveal their suspicions and their plan to infiltrate Sarov's residence – the Casa de Oro - by scuba diving into a cave underneath the house that features a ladder formerly used by smugglers that leads to the grounds. Alex goes with them but stays on the boat while Turner and Troy go underwater. When they do not return after a while, Alex dives in and, after a close encounter with a shark, discovers a mechanical spear trap disguised as stalactites and stalagmites that had impaled Turner and Troy, which kills the shark as well. When he resurfaces, Alex is captured by Conrad, Sarov's disfigured right-hand man, who drugs him. Although Alex reluctantly tells the truth when interrogated by Conrad, he decides to kill Alex anyway by feeding him into two large grindstones in a sugar mill.
