A good grow bag size is 60-75L of soil, which should give enough space for healthy roots and to hold enough water. There is enough space in these bags for 3 or more plants, but it’s a better idea to restrict them to just two if possible, as this gives even more soil for the tomatoes to grow in. Grow bags offer obvious convince, with all the soil you need in one bag. Simply cut holes at the top, plant the tomatoes, and leave them to grow. They are also good at avoiding water loss from evaporation too.

If you choose to store the bags after removing your plants simply add the nutrient-rich soil to your garden or flower beds. After cleaning and drying them, the bags can be laid flat or squished into a tiny space to store until the next time they are needed. When taller growing or top-heavy crops are 20cm (8in) high, push a cane into the bag next to each plant. Tie the plant to the cane and attach the cane to a frame. This will prevent the plants from toppling over in the wind or if they become top heavy. With outdoor cucumbers – build a wigwam or other structure from tall bamboo canes, or use stout netting supported vertically on upright stakes. Cucumbers will also climb up trellis or wires attached to a wall or fence. Ensure climbing plants such as cucumbers and melons have sufficient support and tie cordon tomatoes into strings or canes

Whether your greenhouse is glass or plastic, you might have to ponder warming it during the cooler months. The glass structure can be warmed up using electric fan heaters, but you can also do a few other things to keep the temperature stable. Make use of soil-warming cables Young, well-rooted courgette plants grown from seed indoors should be ready for planting out in early summer, once all danger of frost is past. A greenhouse provides perfect conditions for growing tomatoes throughout much of the year. Unlike planting outside, when you grow tomatoes inside of a greenhouse, you’re using fresh soil each year which is very beneficial for the long-term health and growth of the tomatoes. When growing any fruit or veg the danger of frost can pose a serious threat to your produce. Therefore, growing melons in a greenhouse is much more forgiving than growing them outside. You can start to sow your melon seeds from mid-April until the end of May. To start with, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours to encourage germination and to penetrate the seed. Then like most fruit or vegetables you will need to sow the seeds around 1 inch deep directly into small pots around 3-4 inches in diameter. Water the seeds lightly whenever the soil looks dry being careful not to over-water them and leave the seeds to germinate. What Melon varieties to choose F1 Hybrid varietiesare generally more vigorous and productive, but seeds are more expensive. Several cucumber varieties have an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which shows they performed well in trials, so should crop reliably for you – see our list of AGM fruit and veg. Gallon Bags– If you want to plant one or two smaller plants such as pepper plants the 3-gallon bag will be exactly what you need. Scoop out compost from each square leaving a hole big enough for the root ball of your plant. Put a plant in each hole and refill around it with compost. The top of each root ball should be just below the top of the bag. Gallon Bags– For a big majority of your planting needs the five-gallon bags will be perfect. You can use this size of bag for virtually any plants from potatoes to small trees.

Additionally, several studies done by Dr. Carl E. Whitcome of Oklahoma State University have shown that plants grown in soft containers grew up to 15 percent bigger than those grown in rigid plastic pots thanks to the natural process of air pruning.

For a simple way to ensure your plants are consistently getting enough water many people add a pipe drip system to their grow bags. A drip system requires a simple installation and you won’t ever have to worry about your grow bags drying out. Self-Watering Systems Also, if the grow bags do not provide enough soil it means there is less water retention. When soil cannot hold enough water, they’re more susceptible to drying out in hours, which could result in problems with the tomatoes like split skins and blossom end rot. Pegging points and 4 ground pegs give you option of securing the cover to a lawn or bed. This helps to stabilise the growhouse and make it more airtight to protect your plants from pests. When the soil is questionable, an alternative is to use grow bags and large pots. Pots or bags can be placed on top of white plastic sheeting that has been placed over the soil. If no diseases are present, potting media, including grow bags, can be reused at least once for different crops. Every gardener would benefit greatly from having a greenhouse as it lets them make the most of the sun. Gardeners will be able to extend the growing season and harvest a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers from even the smallest, unheated structure.

There are many cucumber varieties to choose from, varying in fruit size, flavour, disease resistance and growing location. There are indoor varieties for growing in greenhouses, polytunnels or large cold frames, and outdoor or ridge cucumbers for growing in a sunny, sheltered spot. The growhouse has a roll up door with zips on each side to easily open and close. We’ve double-stitched the zipper teeth to the cover to strengthen the zips and stop them snagging. For hungry crops such as winter lettuce, pak choi or mizuna greens, a liquid feed can be applied if necessary Most summer veg will be in the bags for several weeks, so you’ll need to feed them. Add controlled-release feed before you plant by mixing it into the compost where you have cut holes, or add a liquid feed twice a week once the first fruits have formed. Follow the dosage and frequency advice on the bottle.Grow bags can be made from plastic or fabric. Plastic grow bags are less environmentally friendly and don’t last as long as the fabric ones, but they are the cheapest. How you water your melons will have a defining impact on how successful you are. You want the water to reach deep into the roots but not to saturate them or drown them. Too much water can cause the melons to split so try to keep them moist but not wet. Set up an effective watering system to ensure water reaches the roots– an Access drip watering system is ideal. If your greenhouse is on soil, try submerging a plant pot next to the fruit or installing a pipe so you can pour water directly into the soil surrounding the roots. Feeding your plant is easy, liquid tomato fertiliser is ideal and should be used once a week when the fruit has started to appear. Using soil in a greenhouse provides the plants more nutrients while also avoiding much of the pests and diseases outside, ensuring your plants make it through the year and provide a great harvest. Once the plants die off, you can recycle the compost as a soil improver, meaning little goes to waste! The cover features two metal eyelets at the top and an eyelet on each side. This allows you to position canes vertically and horizontally to support your tomato plants and aid their growth. Outdoor cucumbers – hardenoff carefully, before being planting outside from early June, once you’re sure temperatures won’t drop below 12–15°C (53–59°F) at night. Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered spot.
