Nowhere, before or since (sorry McFarland) was Spidey's unnatural athleticism captured so completely. There's no kidding - this collector's edition is the guaranteed be-all, end-all book for the Spider-Man fan! Peter Parker's background, his relationships with Aunt May, his schoolmates and J Jonah Jameson, his love life, the Sinister Six.

In 1962, in the pages of a series slated for cancellation, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created one of the most enduring icons in American popular media: the Amazing Spider-Man! There was a sense of humanity to these stories that while certainly not "realistic" at least gave the characters a depth never explored in comics before. Man, what can be said about these 38 issues (plus a few annuals and other appearances) that hasn’t been said elsewhere? We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our site, provide personalised content and advertising, analyse our traffic, and ensure you see more of what you love. Not every single issue is a knockout, but the truth is that there’s rarely a dud to be found here – there are only a few toward the end, when Ditko is clearly beginning to lose some of his steam. Not only would I be entertained for hours on end, but I imagine the book would be a very effective instrument for clubbing small to moderate-sized animals over the head. Still this book represents the creme-de-la-creme - and anyone with the slightest interest in heroes in tights owes it to themselves to check this out. Today, you will either find most comics to be bland and colorless to the point of losing all personality, or too stylized and out of touch with the characters of the comic (or just plain ugly). By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The series of comics within read great, Providing the full historic beginning and series run of Marvel comic character legends; including Spider-man, Doc Ock, Vulture, Sandman, Fantastic four to mention a few.

Ditko's part as an artist is undoubtedly great (not to mention that he co-plotted the most of the stories), he really gave Spider-Man the attributes that he is so well-known and an atmosphere to his stories that lasts to this times. a collection of storied comic books which pioneered the entirety of the modern-day superhero industry and defined the greatest superhero of all-time for generations to come. The continuation of the outsider stuff from high school is out of place because college is very different. In 1962, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko gave birth to one of the most enduring icons in American popular media: the one and only Amazing Spider-Man! Lee gives Spider-Man the witty quips we've come to expect, while Ditko's art is fundamental in showing how these great characters move and interact. I’m always a fan of Peter being desperate, and this issue ends on one of the key moments in Spider-history.

By the end of the Kirby/Lee run that is this omnibus they are just getting to the familiar storylines everyone knows from the movies. As well as the side characters (Aunt May, Flash Thompson, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane, Harry Ozborn, Liz Allen, Betty Brant). I like the stuff between Betty and Peter, but the way Betty acts about Spider-Man seems cliche, even for grief. A Marvel collectors must have, even if just used as a reference library, although the quality and standard of the publication makes it worthy of much more praise and honourable display on any library shelf.

Spider-Man comics have always been known for their strong lineup of villains (probably the strongest in Marvel Comics), but in the comic's earliest days, there were more than its fair share of dud villains, like the Enforcers and the Tinkerer (you think they'll ever get their own movies? With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more — forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. The way each issue (except for a few) had mostly a self contained plot of there own at the forefront, but still had sub plots that carried over and weaved their way throughout each issues, was absolutely masterful story telling.

Much like the Crime Master two-parter, it does a good job of using all the elements of Spider-Man’s life to drive the tension. These stories are the reason I started reading comics and they’ll always mean something special to me, no matter what format Marvel decides to collect them in. I think the Enforcers are fine, but they are a rather silly remnant that probably seemed dated even in the early sixties. He has a real life, one that’s often more important and more interesting than his life as a crime-fighter. This omnibus includes the run by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko (who co-created Spider-Man with Stan Lee). Spidey and Tomby are about to have their most brutal battle ever, and the worst damage to Peter might not be physical!
