All the youth she stole from the world is returned. I have enjoyed reading The Sleeper and the Spindle as it was very mysterious and interesting. In some parts of the book the description of the scene was so powerful that it made me feel as if I were really there! However, the book was also very frightening and creepy. I did not find that very amusing but the book still had its own jokes which made it bearable to read.

This was a fun audiobook to listen to! It was quite interesting to see this story in two different forms of media: an illustrated novel/picture book and a full-cast dramatisation. Having read the book before, I already knew what to expect, and having seen Chris Riddell's illustrations, it was easy to picture the story and the characters while listening to this dramatisation. The story was fun (like the original novel), and I still really like how Neil Gaiman made his own versions of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. The actors (and their accents) were a pleasant and nice addition. This is one of my favourites from Gaiman. I'm not much of an audiobook person but I really loved this and honestly, I'd consume anything that has Gaiman's name stamped on it. So... clearly this review is biased. BBC made this available for free for a period of time. To anyone reading this, at this point of time you still have 12 more days to listen to this dramatisation of The Sleeper and the Spindle. Heroic Sacrifice: It's revealed the princess gave up her sleep and youth to the witch, to protect her people. When she became an old lady, that's when the curse spread. Award-winning Neil Gaiman shows all his story telling skills in this gripping fusion of familiar fairy tales told in a dark-hearted version with some original characters. Especially a bold-hearted queen. Not far from where the queen lives, a princess is under the spell of an enchantress who has put a whole country to sleep. Despite it being the eve of her wedding day, the bold queen decides to take action. Slipping into her mail shirt she arms herself with her sword and sets off out of the palace accompanied by the three dwarves who will lead her through the tunnels…The dark magic, great courage and spell-binding imagination that power this story is perfectly realised in Chris Riddell’s awesome illustrations. Then she decides she wants to have adventures instead of marriage and tromps off into the sunset and away from her kingdom.Book Genre: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Fiction, Graphic Novels, Retellings, Sequential Art, Short Stories, Young Adult

the queen kissed the princess: fairytales get a And then the queen kissed the princess: fairytales get a

My favourite character was the queen because she was brave, resilient and understood that she didn’t need anyone to make her choices for her. By kissing the sleeping girl, she showed she was fearless and had lots of courage. At the end of the story, she chooses to walk away from her kingdom and go on a new adventure. This could lead to an exciting new sequel. As dark fairy tales go, it had its moments. I loved the sleepers talking and eventually sleepwalking after the heroes. I've said it many times before but Gaiman's tales for kids are way creepier than the ones for adults. The art by Chris Riddell added to the tale and reminded me of old woodcuts at times. Once again combining the magic of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell, this text won the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal upon its release in 2016. Children’s understanding of traditional fairytales will be strengthened in studying this ‘subverted’ version of the genre which cleverly weaves together elements of other familiar stories. Featuring strong female protagonists, the story explores themes of empowerment, positive female representation and breaking free of social expectations. It will also provide a gateway for children to explore other traditional tales such as those by the Brothers Grimm. Think again. If you're an avid fan of fairytale re-tellings, this book is exactly the one for you as it managed to blow my mind on the classic tale I thought I knew so well (I so obviously didn't).It’s ideal for children, but equally delightful for adults in a suitable frame of mind - or wanting to be, as I was. Escape to childhood for half an hour. A queen prepares unenthusiastically for marriage and a future that is mapped out for her. When three dwarves inform her of a cursed kingdom where a princess and her people have lied asleep for decades, the queen decides to take up the challenge to save them, even though many have failed before her. Her upcoming wedding, with some relief, is put on hold. Gaiman encourages you to believe that, just like the Snow White, herself once condemned to a year’s unconsciousness, she would be the ideal person to save the day - but not everything is as it appears. The Sleeper and the Spindle offers an alternate take on the legends of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. It can prompt discussion of the roles of girls in fairy tales. The Sleeper and the Spindle is a young adult short story transformed into a cross between a picture book and a graphic novel. Written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Chris Riddell, it is an excellent example of how the written word and visual art can come together to create an engaging story. The book’s success is only possible, however, because of Gaiman and Riddell’s partnership.
