Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866. During her rather lonely childhood and later, as a young woman, she studied art and natural history. She acquired her love and knowledge of the countryside during family holidays, at first in Scotland and then in the Lake District. She started her career as children's author and illustrator in 1901 when she was thirty-five. In the years before the First World War, demand for her work was so great that she was publishing an average of two new stories a year. As she became financially independent, she was able to buy some land in the Lake District and in 1913, on her marriage to solicitor William Heelis, she moved to live there permanently. For the last thirty years of her life, writing and illustrating gave place to a second career as a sheep farmer and countryside conservationist. For those who aren’t aware, it’s worth making it clear that they are not stories. They are little books that list different examples of the topic areas mentioned above, using Beatrix Potter illustrations/examples. They are clearly designed for younger babies/toddlers, but to be honest, the topics are probably a bit beyond the intended age range. My daughter is now two, and at the time of her most enjoying these books (under one), she was no way near achieving any of these skills. I suppose early exposure can’t hurt thought. Unfortunately, I do feel they’re a little boring. One of the most enjoyable features for my daughter was slotting them in and out of the box. These hard-wearing board books will soon become firm family favourites, and are the perfect introduction for very young children to the wonderful world of Beatrix Potter.

The illustrations are classics, but are also very traditional. I do wonder if the other first little library series may have had more current/vibrant illustrations. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.
