Description

A rolled edge is when the fine sharp point of the blade gets bent, or “rolled” to one side. It may not even be noticeable at a glance but if you touch the sides of the blade edge you will feel a thin “wire” or “lip” of metal off to the side, right at the tip. Sharpening a Fiskars axe requires a few tools to make its blade sharpen. But the basic solution is to use a sharpener. Simply slide the blade into the right slot and roll it a few times to restore the blade’s optimal cutting bevel. This handy little woodland companion features optimum sharpening angles for both Fiskars axes and knives, as well as an easy-to-use mechanism. All axes will dull with use, and rolled edges can be quite common with flat ground edges (like on Fiskars). If rust does start to form in those grooves (or anywhere on the head), I’ve found steel wool or a wire brush are the best way to get in there and clean it out.

I keep an X15 permanently in the trunk of my SUV – all seasons. And in my area, we can go from 40° C to -30° C (100° to -22° F) at the extremes. When chopping with an axe, the axe must perform well; however, an axe with a dull blade should not be used to cut trees. Therefore, it is essential to knowhow to sharpen a Fiskars axeto get better results. If not corrected – the chip will be a weak point that is more likely to lead to additional breakage along the edge. You can also use the Fiskars axe sharpener, which is a simple ceramic pull-through sharpener. It can’t deliver as clean an edge as a stone, but I was quite surprised by how good an edge it can produce. It’s super fast and it’s really easy to use. The Fiskars sharpener is an incredibly versatile tool because it can be used to sharpen both an axe and a knife. In addition, the Fiskars knife and axe sharpener are extremely simple to use. Any pull-through sharper may leave little wires, burs, or particles of steel clinging to the edge and the Fiskars is no exception. Sharpen your blades with Fiskars Xsharp Axe & Knife Sharpener The Fiskars Xsharp™ Axe and Knife Sharpener acts as 2 sharpeners in one. Wood preparation requires that you have the sharpest tools for making the cut. If you chop a lot of wood, it's only a matter of time that your blades will dull. Regular maintenance keeps your Fiskars Axes and Knives sharp and safe. This handy portable tool features 2 sharpeners in 1. Ceramic grind stone has clearly indicated cutting grooves for either axes or knives. Just run the blade through the right groove and roll it a couple of times and your blade will restore its optimal bevel for cutting. This handy little forest companion has optimized sharpening angles for both Fiskars axes and knives and its easy to use mechanism makes it a breeze to work with. It's also small enough to carry along wherever you go.

Fiskars axes have a very flat bit (blade), and all of these axes have much more curved profiles. As a result, it’s harder to do one nice clean motion from one end of the blade to the other. I don’t fault Fiskars for this. It’s part of the deal with a flat grind design (which comes surprisingly sharp for the price). Sharpening is just part of the axe game. Common issues with the Fiskars axe edge Clean away any dirt or wood fibers from the surface of the axe head, as it will be full of moisture. The wider angle will be stronger and more supported, withstanding more impacts without chipping or rolling. This wider second bevel won’t be as useful for tasks like carving, but that’s not really what Fiskars are good for anyway. It will still chop and split well.

This invention collects and holds the metallic flakes of the sharpener that build up normally during the sharpening process, which increases the speed of the honing process. I have to admit I was surprised by how well this cheap little sharpener worked. It’s true you can get a razor-like edge with a sharpening stone, but getting good enough to achieve that takes a fair amount of practice.

Here are the three techniques of the Fiskars axe sharpening process. That will help a user decide which is thebest axe sharpener. Technique One: A Large Sharpening Stone The easiest way is to simply wipe down the head with WD-40 after using the axe. It will both clean away dirt and residue and provide a light oiling at the same time. The sharpener has an optimised sharpening angle for Fiskars blades with an easy-to-use mechanism. It is compact in size for convenient portability.WD-40 is a common solution, but gun oil, boiled linseed oil, and other solutions work great. I have a full article on every way I know to prevent rust on an axe. One method even includes bacon. Sharpening the surfaces of a Fiskars axe and getting a fine-grit Smith Diamond sharpener is a good option. The combination of bench stone, multiple layers of micron-sized monocrystalline diamonds, and a unique sharpening surface with an overlapping oval hole pattern make this sharpener up to the mark. The sharpener seemed to work okay on the Estwing, but not on the other two. They have a different edge profile from a Fiskars axe. They could be tweaked to match the edge of the sharpener, but I don’t plan on using them with it (so I didn’t bother). And Even for the Estwing which worked it required a bit of a different technique.

I tested the Fiskars sharpener on a few other axes I had laying around that were also a little worn from testing. There was a classic Estwing sportsman, Council Tool flying fox, and Husqvarna hatchet. Learn how to reduce chipping and fully maintain your Fiskars axe here. Fiskars sharpener instructions Reduce pressure and strokes at the end, ideally finishing each side with one or two light strokes to keep the edge sharp and clean.

It’s important to note, I would only use this sharpener for a Fiskars or Gerber Axe (Gerber axes are Fiskars). I tried it with some other hatchets, which you can read about below.
