On 1 May 1970, shortly before beginning work on All Things Must Pass, Harrison attended a Dylan session in New York, [78] during which he acquired a new song of Dylan's, " If Not for You". Harrison had accumulated songs from as far back as 1966; both " Isn't It a Pity" and " Art of Dying" date from that year.

In music journalist David Cavanagh's description, once abandoned by his co-producer midway through the summer, Harrison had "proceeded to out-Spector Spector" through the addition of further echo and multiple overdubs.Good grief I'm typing this as I listen and there are instruments coming through that were only hinted at in the Spectre mix but here they are front and centre, also left and right 🤣, haha what an absolute delight. I have the original vinyl triple album, bought the 30th anniversary edition on CD (which was a remastered version) but this is far better. In January 2014, All Things Must Pass was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, [317] an award bestowed by the Recording Academy "to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old". Consider that through entire Beatles catalog he's only credited with 22 songs, and what a surprise, very next year after breakup - individual tripple lp ! On 28 October, Harrison and Boyd arrived in New York, where he and Spector carried out final preparation for the album's release, such as sequencing.

In his 2010 autobiography, Whitlock describes the All Things Must Pass sessions as "spectacular in every way", although he says that the project was informed by Harrison's preoccupation with his former bandmates and ongoing difficulties with Klein and Apple. Writing for Spectrum Culture, Kevin Korber describes the album as a celebration of "the power that music and art can have if we are free to create it and experience it on our own terms", and therefore "perhaps the greatest thing to come out of the breakup of the Beatles".Billboard 's reviewer hailed All Things Must Pass as "a masterful blend of rock and piety, technical brilliance and mystic mood, and relief from the tedium of everyday rock". As well as embracing the Vaishnavist branch of Hinduism, Harrison produced two hit singles during 1969–70 by the UK-based devotees, credited as Radha Krishna Temple (London). Co-produced by the unhinged genius that was Phil Spector, it features his biggest solo hit in the 'He's So Fine' - soundalike, 'My Sweet Lord'. Part of the reason for this was Harrison's need to make regular visits to Liverpool to tend to his mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Music journalist John Harris said George Harrison's "journey" to making All Things Must Pass started when he visited America in late 1968, after the acrimonious sessions for the Beatles' self-titled double album (also known as the "White Album"). Unsubstantiated claims exist regarding guest appearances by John Lennon, [152] Maurice Gibb [153] and Pink Floyd's Richard Wright. The new treatment feels more airy and open with George's guitar and vocal sitting slightly more on top of the mix resulting in this being a more emotional feeling representation of the songs within. These stripped back demos and early takes are exceptional leaving me hoping this album gets the Giles Martin treatment at sometime in the future and also that I had gone for the superdeluxe edition for yet more of these cuts. George, had a backlog of material, some dating back as far as 1966 that he'd been struggling to get onto The Beatles albums and once the band had gone their separate ways this magnificent triple album set was the result. Among its appearances on critics' best-album lists, All Things Must Pass was ranked 79th on The Times ' "The 100 Best Albums of All Time" in 1993, while Rolling Stone placed it 368th on the magazine's 2023 update of " The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Now there is so much depth and nuance to the music and vocals, its as if George is singing just for me it is truly fabulous. In their book The Beatles: An Illustrated Record, Roy Carr and Tony Tyler were likewise lukewarm in their assessment, criticising the "homogeneity" of the production and "the lugubrious nature of Harrison's composing".

In 1999, All Things Must Pass appeared at number 9 on The Guardian 's "Alternative Top 100 Albums" list, where the editor described it as the "best, mellowest and most sophisticated" of all the Beatles' solo efforts.

The majority of the album's backing tracks were taped on 8-track at EMI between late May and the second week of June.
