The quality of the image from the front camera is not as clear as you get with the Nextbase set-up, but isn’t far behind the Thinkware U1000 (below). However, the real surprise was the clarity of the rear footage. It was the best here, and allowed us to read number plates clearly. If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your dash cam and try all the USB ports on your computer.

Review: Nextbase Duo dash cam | Product Reviews | Honest John

Video quality is good enough through both lenses, but the Duo does need more careful setting up than a single lens camera. Typically when setting up a dash camera it needs to be angled slightly downward, which makes the built in sensor collect the correct amount of light from the road ahead, rather than bright sky. Setting the camera too high results in an over dark video.Nextbase’s dash cams continue to improve and add new features, like Alexa voice control, to keep them ahead of the opposition. The newly released 622GW has already won a multi-test focusing on the front cam, and adding a rear lens does little to dent its winning performance.

We have two types of mounts available; a suction cup or an adhesive mount. The adhesive mount is considerably more durable and less prone to breakage. The U1000 does without a display screen, relying instead on a smartphone app, polite- sounding voice synthesiser and a series of lights to control it. It also comes as standard with a hard-wire kit, which is neater and easier to use than a 12V plug, but bear in mind you may need to get the system professionally fitted, which will add to the overall cost. On the dash cam's screen you'll see a menu of 3 options. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. If you want a basic dash camera then there are simpler, cheaper alternatives like excellent Nextbase 402G, but if you need record what is happening both in front and behind of your car then the Duo is ideal. It’s far more user-friendly and much less fiddly than setting up two separate cameras. Then the Dash Cam will be visible as a removable drive on your computer. If you go into My Computer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) you will be able to see the Dash Cam listed as a drive, usually called NEXTBASE.

Plug your Dash Cam in. Ensure the cable is plugged directly into the Dash Cam and NOT via the mount. Connection and set-up are easy, and there’s a choice of suction or adhesive mounts, but the five-metre rear-camera cable was only just long enough on our Discovery; rivals come with eight metres. Although the footage taken in the dark was decent, the daytime video from the front camera was only marginally better than the cheaper Kenwood’s, while the rear camera footage was the least clear in this test. The F200 comes with separate front and rear cameras, mounted on the respective screens with tape. The front camera records in 1080p at 30 frames per second, while the rear unit works at a lower 720p quality. We captured a good amount of detail with the front camera; it adjusted for exposure well and we could read licence plates and road signs easily. If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer.

The Gator’s two cameras are both slim and discreet, and the cable for the rear cam is thinner than usual, so it’s comparatively easy to place discreetly in cars with smaller glass areas.Installing the camera is simple enough thanks to the sturdy suction mount, which shouldn’t come loose even in the event of a minor accident. Once the camera is in place it needs to be adjusted so the wide angle lens points forward and the zoom lens points rearward – these are clearly marked to make life easier. Remove any rear Cameras or SD cards and press the reset button on the underside of the Dash Cam. Then turn the Dash Cam on. Please turn Parking Mode off and turn Screen Saver off as these could interfere with the test results. On the Dash Cam's screen you'll see a menu of 3 options. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. Take your Dash Cam inside and plug it into mains power or a computer using the Nextbase provided USB cable.
