If you start taking it out on your gums, the toothbrush will make a pulsing sound as a reminder to ease off on the pressure. However, there are still many great things about the Philips Sonicare 6100 Protectiveclean that by far make up for what it lacks, such as its impressive brush-head technology, brilliant battery life and, more importantly, excellent tooth-cleaning performance.

The Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 can also be used on fillings, crowns, veneers and other sensitive orthodontics. The brush is fairly easy to clean and water resistant enough to briefly rinse or use in the shower, but we did notice that toothpaste residue accumulates at the base of the handle and can take a little effort to clean. This is a pretty high-spec toothbrush despite lack of Bluetooth connectivity, packing three cleaning modes, a pressure sensor and a smart brush replacement reminder. You can be sure of a safe brushing experience: our sonic technology is suitable for use with braces, fillings, crowns and veneers, and helps prevent cavities and improve gum health. There’s one thing you cannot deny when it comes to the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100, and that it possesses a wonderful sleek and slender design. To start with, the toothbrush begins in EasyStart mode, which slowly increases power over 14 initial uses, to help you get used to it. It also has a pressure sensor that will slow the vibrations of the brush down if you are brushing with too much force — something that is surprisingly easy to do.

The ProtectiveClean 6100 ships with two of Philips’W2 Optimal White brush heads, which have bristles around the outside for getting in between teeth, and a pad inside for whitening and polishing. Although this is one of Philips’ most expensive brushes, its accessories are a little disappointing. Starting life on the consumer PC press back in 1998, David has been at the forefront of technology for the past 20 years. You do get two weeks of regular use from a single full charge, but the charger's just the ticket for longer trips. Overall, you could do much worse than the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100, but you also could do a lot better from our review of electric toothbrushes. While the likes of Oral-B utilise oscillating-rotating toothbrush heads, Philips toothbrushes essentially involve a vibrating brush head that moves bristles side-to-side at high speeds (up to 62,000 brush movements per minute, to be exact). From national newspapers to specialist-interest magazines and digital titles, Lee has written for some of the world’s most respected publications during his 11 years as a journalist. To prevent this, your Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean emits a gentle pulsing sound to remind you to ease off on the pressure. However, we should note that this probably won’t last very long, especially if you don’t fully wash away all the toothpaste from the toothbrush after use.

When you aren’t rinsing your toothbrush under the tap, you’ll find some easy-to-use controls on the handle of the ProtectiveClean 6100. Press too hard while brushing and you get a pulse through the brush handle warning you to loosen up. Finishing in the middle of our electric toothbrush review, we weren't overly impressed with the performance of the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100. The Dutch firm says these gentle vibrations create a dynamic fluid action that propels microbubbles between your teeth, giving you a deeper, clean feeling. You may not notice if you're brushing too hard, but pressure sensor on your electric toothbrush will.In terms of battery life, we found the ProtectiveClean 6100 lasted around three weeks between charges, which - in our opinion - is superb.
