Avengers Assemble began its run featuring the six members from the 2012 film. From issue #9 and on, it does not have an official roster, instead focusing on various Avengers. The Avengers have to choose a roster out of the 39 heroes that answered Thor's call to arms. Throughout the issue, the Avengers manage to whittle the roster down to 7 members and 2 reserves. A lot of great character moments here. At first, with the Avengers in ruins, a new team named The New Avengers is created: Iron Man, Captain America, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Ronin (aka Echo), Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Sentry. It was also the title of the main Avengers series written by Bendis—with art by David Finch, then by Steve McNiven, Leinil Francis Yu, Billy Tan, and Stuart Immonen as the years went by.On a side note, Dark Avengers was published before the Marvel Cinematic Universe properly took off: it'd be interesting to see how much those movies have changed the idea of the default Avengers line-up. The Sentry in particular now feels like an artefact of the time.)

At the same time as Original Sin, another Marvel Event was taking place: AXIS. It puts the Avengers, the X-Men, and a group of villains against Red Skull after he succeeded to harness the powers of Onslaught and the recently deceased Professor Xavier.Avengers Assemble, Vol. 1 is where the modern re-birth of the Avengers franchise took off, setting the stage for the massive success in the 16 years to follow. Ultimately, I hope Busiek is laying his foundation here and will move to a more personal style of storytelling in the next volume. While I've heard of his run as highly regarded, this volume feels constrained by the unfortunate house style of the times.
