It's worth saying at this point that I am quite at ease lugging fairly large amounts of kit and caboodle around with me on a shoot but when it comes down to travel (and I used to get to travel quite a bit) I like to travel light so for me personally I consider a ‘travel camera’ to be something that will fit in a coat pocket! And you’re certainly right that the lens has character, after all it’s a Sonnar, my all-time favorite optical scheme.

I have used the backlight compensation on a couple of occasions, and this has also helped in the strong sunshine in Sydney during the day when shooting upwards. I knew of the forums where there is a following due to the rendering of the lens by being a wide angle Sonnar design. That is why even though it is not broken, I do use some tape on the battery cover to ensure it stays ok. The lens is well-corrected for chromatic aberrations although it can produce noticeably- soft corners at wider apertures. The equivalent machines ( the Canon Sure Shot WP-1 or AS-6, and the Minolta Weathermatic 35, and the Pentax 90-WR, respectively), either aren’t truly submersible or feature less-worthy lenses, bulkier bodies, or clumsy controls. This can be annoying if the film wasn’t loaded properly leading to the fumbling action of opening the door, re-aligning the leader, and closing it — instead of taking a picture. Travelling far and wide for work meant that I required something fairly small and light but without compromising on quality. This means you can sneak a shot, then turn away (or put the camera inside your jacket) to muffle the already quiet sound of the film advance. Holding the camera, it is definitely light weight, but lacks that cheapness of later plastic point and shoot cameras. Once there’s dim light to force the camera to close down the aperture, soft corners and comma distortions disappear.

In an way, these cameras brought photography to the masses in the same way the original Kodak and Brownies did in 1888 and 1900. In terms of the upgrades, it now supported DX encoding, which meant that the film speed did not have to be manually set. Initially there was some concern and rumours that the lens on this camera was not manufactured by Nikon. Since there’s no way to tell how long the shutter will remain open, it’s important to be aware of this weird functionality when shooting in low-light and remember to listen for the shutter to close before releasing the button. The button is very easy to feel where it is focus locking, which is a relief as some cameras I struggle to find it and accidentally shoot the frame when I am not ready.I obviously like it, and I got quite a lot of comments from people that saw me shooting with it that loved the “old-school” eighties-style. Once you have loaded the film, close the back-door and press shutter speed to hear if the film has been captured. I have had one for years and every time I see it in my Nikon point and shoot collection, I really want to take it out and use it. This camera combined many of the best features from the first and second L35AFs and added a few more things to the mix.

That said I like the size for shooting, the grip fits my hand well, also the whole thing has more heft than you might think at first glance. Nikon went big with this lens, in the sense that they used some of their tried and trusted techniques, dipping into their strengths. There was also a cheaper version, the ID, released in 1957, which lacked power steering and had a manual gearbox, and an estate car version, the Safari, appeared in 1958. Some people tend to forget that just because a camera is simple to use, doesn’t mean it’s not capable of excellent results.

At 485 grams it weighs slightly more than the smallest point-and-shoots of its time, and with dimensions of approximately 134x81x56mm, it’s slightly bulkier as well. Where the Nikon L35AF tends to be uniformly excellent, image quality with the Canon ranges from great to substandard, depending on shooting conditions. The on/off switch is considered one of the camera’s weaknesses as it has been reported to break by some users. Nikon came to the automatic compact camera market quite late compared to most the other manufacturers. If you take the L35 AF apart then you have to be aware that the flash can still hold a charge and could be very dangerous.A Birmingham streetscape - snap shot grabbed literally seconds before I arrived at my work destination - I guess these shots in particular speak to one of the L35AF’s strengths, that fast auto focus plus a great lens and accurate metering allow you to grab quick / action shots on the fly. They can understandably shun some photographers, but if you like the ( not necessarily soft but ) unique look of a vintage lens in a compact, easy-to-use package , this camera is a good choice. It’s a mixed bag, with some common issues and amazing shots, it’s well worth finding out if it’s worth trying one out. Máy cầm khá đầm tay, máy hơi to (so với T2) nhưng khôn
