Yet on the night of her eleventh birthday, the children’s father secrets them into the Rare Books’s Room of the North Brava Public Lending Library.

This is a dystopian world of airships, dingy back alley streets and magical books that could bring back the dead, ruled by an oppressive Government with a hatred of children. Allein schon die Namen wirken wie aus dieser Zeit gefallen und ich hatte durchgehend ein beklemmendes Gefühl, während ich die Protagonisten begleitet habe. His arc, although perhaps predictable, was satisfying nonetheless, and he is a memorable character that has stayed with me days after finishing the book. The writing has a lyrical quality to it which adds to the fantastical nature of the world and makes some very simple statements beautifully poignant.Les personnages étaient attachants et à partir de la deuxième moitié, les actions se sont enchaînés. An exhilarating, awe-inspiring debut from a master storyteller writing for children for the first time, perfect for fans of Katherine Rundell, Eva Ibbotson and His Dark Materials. This is a story that values bravery, the magic of books and the influence of individuals who follow the right course even when the world around them feels oppressive. Unfortunately for Rachel and Robert, their father is captured and imprisoned, leaving them as sole protectors of the book.

You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. We recommend this book for reading at bedtime, as a classroom read aloud, for every reader to experience. When Rachel and Robert are passed a stolen book by their librarian father, they have to go on the run and protect it at all costs.

I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. This is a superbly written book that I highly recommend for children who are not put off by a little darkness in the stories they read.

I think getting completely swept up in Rachel throughout the story and discovering what happened to her brother instead of knowing what is going on before her would have jammed up the suspense and engagement. It will take every skill they possess and then the moral compass instilled in them each by their parents. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. The thick lathering of suspense and intrigue - throughout the entire book - kept me turning pages late into the night.
