Description

Although Van Inwagen does posit his own views, he spends more time picking at opposing arguments rather than supporting his own, but that is something very common in philosophy, so I guess it really isn't a criticism, per se. Throughout he covers all of the basic problems and terminology in metaphysics today: inviduation, externality, objective realism, free will, mind-body problem, etc.

Updates include extensive rewriting of the chapter on time, enhanced clarity throughout the text, updated notes and suggested reading throughout. Today, Van Inwagen is one of the leading figures in contemporary metaphysics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of action. In thoughtful and engaging prose, Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions: What are the most general features of the world? Van Inwagen argues for physicalism about the human person, and libertarian free will about said persons powers.

The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology: the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. The author is humble enough to recognize that thoughts and emotions are presently beyond our understanding, but makes arguments on intuitive grounds - and intuition on it’s own lack reliability and a case stronger than personal preference. He is the author of An Essay on Free Will (1983), Material Beings (1990), Being: A Study in Ontology (2022), and seven other books. Van Inwagen presents both sides of the argument in fair terms -- while often making it clear which side he falls on. On my first ready I'd say I had a about 50-70% overall comprehension even though I had 99% comprehension of the individual sentences.

earned his PhD from the University of Rochester under the direction of Richard Taylor and Keith Lehrer. This text is divided into three parts: The Way the World is, Why the World Is, and the Inhabitants of the World. For a supposedly introductory book, the chapter was too biased on the side of libertarianism, as compatibilism was reduced to a terrible straw-version of itself.

On the other hand, the new editions "part III" on ontology is one of the best expositions of this metaphysical specialty (see also E. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2005 and was President of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association in 2008-2009. For anyone taking a Metaphysics course, or even anyone interested in getting involved in the conversation, I would highly recommend van Inwagen's introductory text.
