There are hilarious details, and I like how the detective Nestor Burma goes around to figure out what happened.

Years before, Adamsberg’s own brother had been the principal suspect in a similar case and avoided prison only thanks to Adamsberg’s help. From the internationally acclaimed author of some of this century’s most breathtakingly original novels comes this posthumous collection of thirty-six literary essays that will make any fortunate reader view the old classics in a dazzling new light. This one is closer to La Panthère des neiges ( Seeking the Snow Leopard in Tibet) than the one I just listened by him. While in London for a conference, Adamsberg and his commandant, Adrien Danglard, inadvertently share in a macabre discovery: 17 shoes. Suzanne had spent a great deal of time teaching Soliman about his African roots, and Soliman is constantly spouting often unfathomable African legends to apply to various situations. He is a celebrity noted for his documentary studies of Canadian grizzly bears, but he has, for the moment, become fascinated by France's European wolves. Vargas is unusual both for her background and for the style of her novels, which depart from the usual formulas and clichés of crime fiction. He has a good rapport with his colleagues, although they find him a bit strange, and an even better rapport with the common man.

I read/listened to 12 books in January, so I should be able to read more than the titles below, but they are the priority titles for me this month. Instead, Adamsberg relies on a remarkable intuition that even he doesn’t understand, piecing together minor and seemingly unrelated details to solve murders. If you are interested in trying one of Vargas’ books, I would start with the first Adamsberg novel, The Chalk Circle Man.

The Three Evangelists, set mainly in Paris, is an excellent example and the three title characters are thirty-something historians, Mathias, Marc and Lucien, all specialists in three different periods of history and all down on their luck. While the mystery itself is a bit predictable, it's not really the who that counts, but rather the getting there that makes this story. I think this novel was kinda fun, a mystery road-trip undertaken by oddball characters following a map of murder! A bizarre Robespierre fan club, old family grudges, red herrings, and old Norse myths are the makings of this Adamsberg case. And when a circle is discovered with decidedly less banal contents – a woman with her throat slashed – Adamsberg knows that this is just the beginning. When three elderly men are poisoned by spider venom, everyone assumes that the deaths are tragic accidents.
