Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures. As an industry-leading hard drive manufacturer, Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a 5-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle free data storage.

Thank you!

Reliability: Desktop drives aren’t typically designed for the demands of an always-on NAS environment. WD Red Pro hard drives are designed to perform under tough conditions encountered in high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments. WD Red HDDs have for many years reliably powered home and small business NAS systems around the world and have been consistently validated by major NAS manufacturers. Having built this reputation, we understand that, at times, our drives may be used in system workloads far exceeding their intended uses. Additionally, some of you have recently shared that in certain, more data intensive, continuous read/write use cases, the WD Red HDD-powered NAS systems are not performing as you would expect. We've been impressed with the latest incarnation of the WD Red range of drives. Certainly, WD has the best capacity range, with 10TB (370), 8TB (270), 6TB (217), 4TB (127), 3TB (99), 2TB (84) and 1TB (57) available. In comparison, the N300 range is slightly cheaper for the same capacity, but has fewer options in its range: 8TB (228), 6TB (180) and 4TB (110). We've been impressed with the latest incarnation of the WD Red range of drives. If you need smaller or larger capacities than rival Toshiba offers or want the best performance, the WD Red line-up is an excellent choice. WD’s Red series of hard drives target consumer NAS (network-attached storage) solutions, with disk configurations between 1 and 5 recommended for 4TB and smaller drives, and between 1 and 8 for the 5 and 6TB models. If your intent is to go beyond 8 disks for a single array, WD recommends choosing its Red Pro series instead. Not only is that series faster, it boosts the warranty to 5 years. But, there’s a caveat: there’s no 5 or 6TB model.

Noise and vibration: Typically designed for single drive applications, average desktop drives are not optimized for multi-drive systems which have higher noise and vibration levels. When these drives are added to a NAS, the additional vibration can reduce the reliability and life span of the drive. Due to the fact that the range of use cases for NAS has become increasingly diverse, we are now making it easier for users to match the right drive with their applications and workloads – from moderate small office/home office (SOHO) workloads to intensive small- and medium-business (SMB) use, as well as more demanding environments. The WD Red Family The RAID controller maps out the bad sector, locating it elsewhere on the drive. The missing sector is rebuilt using parity data from the other drives in the array.

A high quality HDD that makes for fast NAS drives, but the price could be more competitive

Western Digital’s exclusive NASware™ technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads which helps increase performance and reliability. Our current device-managed shingled magnetic recording (DMSMR) (2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 6TB) WD Red series will be the choice for the majority of NAS owners whose demands are lighter SOHO workloads. However, things started to change in our other tests. Using large files, we found the WD Red 6TB managed a read speed of 217.87MB/s and write speed of 235.16MB/s. With small files, we got 217.59MB/s read speeds and 200.06 write speeds. These proved the WD Red to be faster than the Toshiba N300. As we’re not too concerned with the performance of the PC as a whole, for our testing here we deselect all default tests and run only the “Secondary Storage” suite, with the hard drive in question as the chosen drive. Tests in this suite range from the loading of applications, running a Windows Defender scan, editing video, gaming and more.

Outside of the 6TB model, WD’s Red series carries a typical premium over the Green, with Seagate matching the Red for the most part. If you are encountering performance that is not what you expected, please consider our products designed for intensive workloads. These may include our WD Red Pro or WD Gold drives, or perhaps an Ultrastar drive. Our customer care team is ready to help and can also determine which product might be best for you.
