Small oats ( Avena strigosa) is a different species from mainland oat ( A. sativa); it was once widely grown on poorer soils in mainland Scotland and Wales. On the highly alkaline nutrient deficient Machair soils, mainland oats does not yield unless treated with manganese. Small oats produce a nutritious winter fodder. European-wide it has become a rare crop and the Uists may be one of the largest remaining areas of its cultivation. The spectacular displays of wild flowers in spring and early summer make a visit to the Machair grassland unforgettable. At the same time, it is one of the rarest habitat types in Europe only occuring in north-west Scotland and western Ireland. The following texts offer more detailed information on this scarcely known habitat and its accompanying use. Accommodation

The local cereal varieties, grown from local seed, are small oats and rye, sometimes barley. They are comparable to native or traditional breeds such as Highland cattle, Hebridean sheep and Eriskay ponies; these cereals have been on the Uists over centuries perhaps even millennia. Seed of these varieties is not sold commercially and the islands have to be self-reliant in on-farm seed production. Cattle- and sheep-grazing is the typical agricultural land-use. Due to their unselective grazing, cattle improve the quality of the grassland for other grazers as well as for wildlife.

It's easy to store — an upright vacuum can stand by itself and has a narrow body — and, as with a cylinder vacuum, it’s plugged into the mains rather than battery-powered. Unfortunately, cattle farming, which is labour intensive, is marginally economic and therefore declining. Sheep have increasingly replaced cattle and these are kept in fenced areas all year round. These areas tend to become overgrazed so losing most of their ecological value as well as becoming susceptible to soil erosion. M is the local Mach number, u is the local flow velocity with respect to the boundaries (either internal, such as an object immersed in the flow, or external, like a channel), and c is the speed of sound in the medium, which in air varies with the square root of the thermodynamic temperature. The canister is detachable, so you can lift it up and use it like a cylinder vacuum to reach up high or clean stairs and furniture with an extendable hose. This makes it almost as practical as a cordless model for spot cleaning, but with the suction power of an upright. Even in an upright position it's light, compact and easy to move around. It's freestanding and the suction power can be easily adjusted via a switch on the handle. It was shot entirely on location on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides from 1992 to 1996, and after 1996 interior scenes were shot in Studio Alba, which was originally built to accommodate it in Stornoway. [7] The series was funded by the Gaelic Television Committee, and according to government reports, had the effect of creating jobs and boosting the economy in the islands. [8]

The best upright vacuum cleaners excel on carpet but work well on hard floors, too – look for the option to switch off the motorised brush roll to protect wood, tile or linoleum floors, or for models that come with an extra floorhead especially for that purpose.
