Description

Few shows will ever hit such scale, and precious few moments such as the one experienced earlier this summer, can mean so much to so many.

The production on Knebworth 22 is perfect with crystal-clear sound but without the sense that it’s been polished to within an inch of its life in the studio. Is there anything new here? Well not really, but this is a well-presented and enjoyable album full of fantastic songs – a worthwhile addition to the collections of die-hard fans and completists while providing a great overview for those playing catch-up. For anyone who attended any of last summer’s dates, and Knebworth in particular, you get the perfect memento in the form of an album which really captures the raw atmosphere of the Liam Gallagher live experience. Should you dash out and buy it? Definitely maybe. There is always the danger with a Liam Gallagher gig that it will be viewed as a substitute for the real thing, with his old band being the elephant in the room. Are his renditions of Oasis numbers as good as the originals, are the solo songs penned with his writing team as catchy, clever and inventive as those created by his older brother, and does it really matter? Moreover, Liam selling out Knebworth solo felt like the definitive mic-drop in the continuing spat between Liam and his guitarist brother, Noel, Oasis’s songwriter. Oasis broke up in 2009 when Noel dramatically quit before a gig in France, citing his brother’s behaviour as the reason. In the aftermath, the rump Oasis lineup carried on as Beady Eye, while Noel founded his next band, High Flying Birds. For a while, it felt as if Noel, the creative, was doing notable things while Liam, the shopfront, was coasting with Beady Eye. Liam’s marriage broke down; he cut ties with his Pretty Green fashion label; and Beady Eye split, in part so that guitarist Andy Bell would be free to reform Ride, his Britpop-era shoegaze band. The theatrical event screenings will also feature two additional songs from the Knebworth performance to be played after the main feature, which will be exclusive to cinemas and won't appear on any further release of the film. Completing an all-new top three on the latest chart blast is Volcano (Caiola), from electronic act Jungle. Volcano should blast to the duo’s fourth top 10 appearance.

Edits and Comments

Gallagher strolls on stage, deliciously on-brand in a cagoule, shoulders down, face rising up to meet the microphone as he blares out Morning Glory from Oasis’s 1995 LP (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? as a how do you do. In a musical landscape increasingly dominated by acts pumping out ancillary video content on socials, servicing fans 24/7, he feels like one of the last bastions of the idea that singers should not be approachable, or like the rest of us; that they should come mob-handed, with bone structure and maracas. Will Oasis catch reunion fever? Damon Albarn’s got money on it Rather entertainingly, when asked in the documentary where he would position himself in the crowd if he was a fan, Liam is characteristically honest, replying: "Oh, I'd be at the f****** bar getting w******".

And his fans were up for it, as one says in the film: "It's like destiny, it's like travelling to Mecca. It's a pilgrimage, we don't have a choice, it's something we have to do. We'll be there with our parkas on and the stupid haircuts. We'll be going for it, we'll be ready." We've all needed it. You know, the last few years have been so tough in the world and the idea of a big single is concert where we all come together and celebrate as one being, that's what the film explores, the power of live music against adversity."Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge. He describes the band as "the underdogs," going on, "they didn't come from privilege. They didn't come with industry connections. They just had some phenomenal songs and an amazing stage presence. John Major was prime minister, Spice Girls had spent most of the summer at number one with their debut single Wannabe and Germany had beaten England on penalties, going on to win Euro 1996.

Knebworth 22’ further cements Liam’s reputation as the incredible live performer that he is and how this iconic gig will go down in history as one of his best ever performances. While not repeating the themes explored in the earlier film, Liam Gallagher: As It Was, Toby says his documentary goes on to "highlight again in a new up to date way that transition point between what do you do after peaking in the biggest band of the time and then try to find your own solo voice and growing up in public". a b McFee, Edwin (11 August 2023). "Album Review: Liam Gallagher, Knebworth 22 (Live)". Hot Press . Retrieved 15 August 2023. The heady atmosphere of the shows shines throughout the ‘Knebworth 22’ live album, from the roar of approval that greets Liam as he steps up to open the show with ‘Hello’ right through to the mass singalongs that greet the closing Oasis classics ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’ - the latter featuring a very special guest in the shape of Stone Roses legend John Squire. And, just last month, Noel said in an interview there was "no point" in an Oasis reunion as the band sell "as many records now" as they did when they were together. Top Albums (Week 33, 2023)". And I think that that's an aspirational story to this day, and I think anyone that aspires to do something great with their lives, just remember that story. Anything can happen if you put the time and the work into it." The director says Liam was a driving force in putting his fans at the heart of the film: "He was just totally in, and he was so excited about the idea that we were going to be focusing on his audience as much as him in this film… More so than anything else in the industry, that's all he cares about, the people."Twenty-six years later, in June 2022, following the release of his third solo album, C'mon You Know, Liam performed to 170,000 fans at the Hertfordshire stately home, across two nights - which were again, completely sold-out.
