SELF-ESTEEM

Description
Over lockdown she started an Instagram account named Steam with Self Esteem, through which she and fans worked out together daily.
I want to do Gaga, half-time Super Bowl standard, but I’m in the Bristol Fleece,” she says, referring to a music venue in the city. But her songs are also maximalist, danceable and infectiously fun – a wholesale rejection of the restrained indie-folk of her previous band, Slow Club. The women on the recording speak about barking at groups of men as a form of self-protection; at Self Esteem live shows audience members bark and howl in homage to this line.LP: I remember that when you were making Compliments Please [Self Esteem’s 2019 debut album], you would be frustrated by a lack of people paying the attention the album deserved, so what changed and when did that happen? Taylor was inspired with the confidence to pursue a solo career after watching RuPaul's Drag Race – "that whole ethos of not being ashamed to be confident or brilliant". Listening to the album feels like getting a shot of authentic girl power, without the need for a label like that.
One of those layers is camp – Taylor performed at Glastonbury 2019 in a minidress made of Boots Advantage cards – but there is also sincerity. In music, for instance, you either have to be a boss bitch or you’re singing a torch song, but that middle bit is the life I live in and no one really says it because popular art has to make such finite sense to people. In Slow Club I used to struggle with the fact there was no manifesto, aesthetic – it was just two people’s opinions. Her works are like Thelma and Louise without the tragic ending, an invitation to anyone unhappy with their lot to stop being pliant – to “be braver”. This is my day in the sun’ … Self Esteem talking to Alexis Petridis at Glastonbury festival’s William’s Green stage.
