Description

Speyburn 10 years old is a relatively light and delicate dram, so if you like a single malt that is big and bold perhaps it won’t appeal. Nevertheless, for the money, it is one of the most affordable single malts on the market. Again a good introductory single malt for the novice. Palate: Soft and light bodied but the barley is not shy and takes control. A bit oily. By mid-palate there is a nice sweet/tart interchange as the spices (mint of some sort) begin to exert their influence. Finally, the oak tannins arrive and bitter things out. Up to this point, this malt was really enjoyable and it is a shame better cask selection practices are not in place for their 10 yo.

I do not rule out the possibility that this batch of Speyburn 10 is a lot better than what I had 4 years ago, either. If it is a lot better than I remember then I will still not trust to buy a bottle of this brand, because I have a long memory of what that other stuff tasted like. The Macallan’s whisky is in demand because it’s hand produced in Speyside’s smallest stills and is of consistently excellent quality. Although this whisky has only spent 12 years maturing (the ‘double cask’ refers to American oak and ex-Sherry) it has still taken on loads of rich, fruity flavours. Juicy citrus, warming oak and ginger spices, sweet vanilla and dried fruits all swirl around in a sweet, oily syrup of a drink – enjoy this one and think of the money you’ve saved on their older expressions. Speyburn 10 Tasting Notes

Currently the #9 best selling single malt in the world it’s distilled at the Speyburn-Glenlivet distillery and is the only whisky to be made using water from Granty Burn, which is a tributary of the River Spey. The water in the River Spey is part of the reason Speyside whisky tastes the way it does and why they all seem to have a similar character to them. This delightful dram, the Speyburn 10, is no different. In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, production at the distillery ceased and it was used to house the Scottish Artillery Regiments. Production did not finally restart until 1947. Taste: Medium bodied with hints of toffee & butterscotch and a long, sweet finish. A global favourite, Speyburn 10 years old is ever the crowd-pleaser. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. There’s a light orchard fruit that’s very pervasive throughout the nose. Apples, pears, and apricots paired with honey and just a hint of malt. A touch of red licorice, hint of peat and some very mellow caramel round out the nose and create a very pleasant bouquet. Taste: Quite well balanced, with fresh fruit, creamy vanilla and hints of spice and oak. Sweet honey notes. These French casks previously held the aperitif Pineau and they add new layers to those created by the American Oak casks the whisky starts out it. The whisky is honey sweet and cakey, with vanilla, squishy stone fruits and hints of toasted nuts thrown in, but there’s also something a little different – something fresh, bright and floral and too complex to pinpoint exactly. It’s a top notch whisky with a subtly interesting twist. The decidedly compact whisky distillery sits in the gentle undulations of Moray, just to the north of Rothes. The Speyburn distillery is rather quaint with its pagoda roof and pretty stone buildings, indeed it is said to be Scotland’s most prolifically photographed. In 1916, Distillers Company Limited acquired Speyburn from John Hopkin and they subsequently closed the distillery for the Second World War and did not reopen it until 1947. During this period, two regiments from the Scottish Artillery used the distillery for accommodation. You are responsible for all activities through your account. All Speyburn single malt is matured in air-dried oak casks seasoned with bourbon or sherry, to help the spirit fully develop its natural qualities. We're on the same wavelength with the palate - heather honey, lemon zest, green apple, croissant, vanilla extract, ginger and a bit of butterscotch. Thin mouthfeel. Chili spice adds a nice balance, but still a bit too sweet for my taste (though water helps with that). Decent balance, medium body and a slightly oily texture with almost no burn that makes it almost too easy to drink.

Taste: Subtle with honey and vanilla, yet full bodied. Creamy and smooth with a long spicy finish. Energetic and appealing, this is the brightest member of the Speyburn range.I first tried the Speyburn 10yo many years ago and just thought it was OK; I reviewed their entry-level NAS expression seven years ago (it was in another advent calendar) and gave it a crap 70. So here we go, another round. Speyside is the busiest of all Scotland’s whisky regions, with more distilleries than anywhere else in the land, including many of the most famous names in single malt. Indeed, the world’s best selling single malt lists are regularly topped by The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and The Macallan, which all hail from the Speyside region.
