Surprisingly, the village is covered in hairlike volcanic glass fibers, and all of it shines a bright gold. Village of the Siren” highlights Ito’s forest and mountain motif which he uses frequently to isolate the characters from the rest of the world. Deserter by Junji Ito is the latest collection of stories by the horror manga author to be published in English by VIZ media.

This collection is interesting as insight into the early work of Ito, but displays the flaws of a developing manga artist. A warm, unsentimental and beautifully-observed book for our times' Lucy Caldwell, author of These Days 'If I were in bother I'd want the Ballybrady bunch at my back. And when her friend tries to figure out why by listening to a recording of her before her death, he finds himself in over his head against a terrible power. There’s a similar streak of dark humour in ‘Bullied’, in which a woman reconnects with a man she used to torment when they were kids. In “Face Thief” there’s some difficulty telling characters apart, but then it becomes clear this is the point of the plot, as a character is literally able to steal other people’s faces. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town's inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen.

But then there’s ones like “The Reanimator’s Sword” which seems interesting at first, but then it devolves into an immortal chosen one style of story. Kris is a librarian for the Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries, because being a Power Ranger was not a ‘legitimate life choice. Although it is 1953, eight years after the end of the war, Kikuyo's family has convinced him that it is wartime and he is still wanted for desertion. However, if you’re already familiar and want to consume more of his work, I would totally recommend it just to see how the author evolved and to read those last five stories. A Father’s Love” still is a little rough in the art department at times, but it has a compelling stories and characters you really feel for (ooh, I shipped those two young kids! Ito’s artwork is always bouncing from the ethereal beauty of ghosts and nature to the disgusting body horror and gore of an R-rated film.
