Feyre intervenes, and Nesta tells Feyre about the baby’s wings and that Rhys and the rest have been keeping it a secret. It does setup Cassian and Nesta’s “interactions” a little bit, and also notes a change in scenery for where the group meets in ACOSF. Although Nesta resents being Made by the Cauldron and can't quite find her place in the Fae world, she knows she wouldn't be accepted back into the human realm and thus reluctantly chooses the first option. While everyone else was taken in by stories about where Feyre went, Nesta saw through Fae glamour and spells, and was furious and alone in that knowledge. The inner circle observes the two males and conclude that they weren’t themselves, somehow under some sort of enchantment.

When her recklessness hits a low point, Rhysand and Feyre give her an ultimatum: train with Cassian and work in the library under the House of Wind, or be banished to the human lands. Vassa responds saying, that there are rumors that they’re stirring again across the sea, and are poised to start trouble. They talk about the cruel nature of the kelpie and the one that Nesta slew was perhaps the last of its kind.Cassian can’t save Nesta because according to the rules, “Anyone who pulls a warrior from the Blood Rite will be hunted down and executed. This particular subplot dovetails frustratingly with Nesta’s story in a way that I shan’t spoil, not least because there are plenty of other things to discuss. Earlier books in this series are also about trauma and recovery, but in a way that prioritizes acceptance.

Nesta and Emerie want to stay behind with Gwyn, and then they share stories and they decide to climb the mountain instead. The result is more a complex character study of one of the series’ most prickly and difficult characters – Nesta Archeron – and less a sweeping fantasy adventure than some of the series’ previous efforts.
