CIS has two very strong area control pieces in Dooku and Grievous, and one excellent long range firepower piece in the AAT. I like to be cagey with my B1s until my opponent has their hands full with one of those anchor units. Threat saturation is important for any list, but it is doubly important for a faction like CIS where your corps units are so fragile and so individually weak. Upgrades Heavy Weapon Upgrades We already talked about the essential HQ uplink above. That should be your first consideration for the comms slots on your B1s. Mostly I leave the comms slot naked on my non-uplink B1s, but there are a couple of interesting possibilities. Comms Relay Reviewing the factions on the whole is a bit difficult because the starter box doesn’t give you the best idea of how they play. The starter boxes contain a commander, 2 corps (basic infantry), and a support unit for each side. The downside to playing with just the starter boxes is you get the vague impression all the factions feel very similar. I personally chose to play the Rebel Alliance because it’s my favorite force from the movies but if you’re more influenced by how a faction plays then this handy guide will give you a vague idea of how they work, once expansions start being added in. Rebel Alliance When a unit activates it gets to do two of the following actions – only the Move action can be duplicated – all the rest you can only perform once. The list of actions is as follows: Your B1s need to be able to coordinate to each other, and to do that they need to be close to each other. Since coordinate is measured from mini to mini, I like to do what I call “honeycombing,” which basically means that you overlap your B1s such that each B1 is within range in both directions of multiple other B1s, so if you lose one unit it doesn’t break your chain.

Comms jammer is extremely situational. I could see throwing this on B1s as a hedge against timing-sensitive aggressive units like Tauntauns, but that is kind of what you have Dooku for. I personally can think of a lot better ways to spend five points. It would be entertaining if you got a jammer B1 unit into the mix against another CIS player, but I can think of a number of other units with comms slots that are much more likely to be in your opponent’s grill than B1s (STAPs, stabby BX droids, Cad Bane). In the core set you get: Luke Skywalker, 2 squads of Rebel Troopers (with optional trooper with a mini gun or Ion cannon) and an AT-RT walker. I have an airbrush, which I used for many of these initial steps, but you could easily do most of this the old fashioned way. Sadly, they are a bit of an uphill battle for newcomers. Their core mechanic was nerfed and the point cost per models has remained high. Most lists involve using Anakin or Yoda with Padme to use Exemplar to share more tokens than usual. That said they are not a total loss, so if you’re really interested in them give them a shot anyway! They are just very difficult to play and not forgiving of mistakes. There is an argument to be made that none of this is permanent, there have been shifts in the meta before. For example, Empire went from the worst faction in the game by quite a bit, to the best for a time and now is in a pretty good place balance wise. The challenge is we can’t anticipate what balance changes could come in the future. It could result in Republic becoming top dog next year or no meaningful change at all. All I can reliably give you is the here and now. Each commander (Luke & Vader in the Core Set, but more, like Leia will follow) brings their own set of three unique cards, and these are placed in your hand alongside the more generic cards. The important information on these cards are the pips in the top left-hand corner, and on the bottom of the card, and how many units they activate. Once the secretly selected cards are flipped over, the person who selected the cards with the fewest pips, will get ‘priority’ and be the first to act, and activate a unit in the Activation Phase. The longer, pointier, cooler looking cousin of the E-5C. I’m not really sure why the “s” is lowercase, or why this dude needs a wire to connect his face to the scope (how does he run like that?). Anyway, this is my second favorite heavy weapon choice for B1s, and I often end up running 1-2 of them. In the core set you get: Obi-Wan Kenobi, 2 squads of Phase 1 Clone troopers (with an optional trooper with a mini-gun or long range blaster rifle), and a BARC speeder bike Make sure you have a plan for how to do squad markings on your B1s, or both you and your opponent are going to be pulling your hair out and wasting a lot of time trying to figure out who belongs where. If it is after 2pm on a Friday, a weekend or bank holiday you must wait until the next working day before your item is shipped. Where possible we will aim to ship faster but we reserve the right to adhere to the policy. That said I don’t think any of these factions are “unlearnable” to a beginner. The difficulty curve overall isn’t too bad and with enough persistence you can learn the Clone War factions just fine. What is “Good”?

Aim: Number of aim tokens as part of your aim (if any). Normally, this will be 1 (if aiming) or 0 if not aiming. You know what isn’t bad? 40 B1s. Suddenly you have a lot of bodies and dice for your opponent to deal with. Coordinate isn’t the only reason to keep your B1s close to each other, you need to make sure they are supporting each other offensively. And of course, perhaps the most entertaining way you can customize your army is by painting and customizing your miniatures! All Star WarsLegion minis come unpainted, so after you assemble your army, you’ll be able to paint your miniatures into something that only you could have created. Although you don’t need to paint your miniatures, many players find it more enjoyable to play with a painted army, and even if you’ve never painted an army of miniatures before, Star WarsLegion is the perfect introduction to the hobby.

What gets really interesting is when you give them surge tokens. A single surge tokens increases their average hits to about 3.7, which is rather punchy for a 54 point unit. The E-5C is my default heavy weapon choice when I am kitting out my B1s. Unless I am building a list specifically with naked B1s in mind, I usually end up with at least 4 E-5C’s if not 5-6. E-5s
