Reading books together can encourage their love of reading. And letting them read those same books to you can boost their confidence over time. In some instances, secondary schools use book bands to support and monitor progress for children who require additional support in their reading or to structure reading choices for children within a range of titles that still provide variety and challenge. What are the Book Band colours? One may be a proficient reader, able to understand texts that are usually read by children a few years older. So while this child is only 10 years old, they have a reading age of 12. A reading level is simply a measure of your child’s ability to read text. It reflects how well your little one can read independently. Reading levels help you choose books that are a good match for your child while still presenting a challenge. When you sit down to read a book, you want to enjoy the story in front of you. You don’t want it to be so frustrating you can barely get through it. The same is true for your child. That’s why uncovering your child’s reading level is an important step in fostering their love of words from a young age! Choose how you want our system to match inflected words with their base words. Our system will count both base words and their inflections as familiar words; otherwise, to count just the base words as familiar and their inflections as unfamiliar (i.e. difficult words), select "Off."

Many schools and teachers opt for the book band scheme because of its benefits to the pupils and because of its convenience.

Lexile® is one of the most common reading level systems. These levels are indicated by a number followed by the capital letter L. They range from 10L for brand-new readers to 2000L and above for advanced readers. The first digit of the score roughly corresponds with grade level, so a book rated 370 would be appropriate for most third graders. When looking for “just right books” for Lexile levels, aim for those that are rated 100L below to 50L above your child’s current score. Many of us remember a couple of books that our family read together regularly. Often these are holiday books or a favorite story. Rereading is a great way to get the whole family involved, as everyone can take turns reading and connecting on the same story. They will recognise the letters in their own names and may begin practising writing and spelling their name. Reading schemes are a helpful and concise way of teaching children to read, especially when following reading levels or book bands. They ensure that children receive the right amount of challenge as they develop and grow their reading skills. KS2 book bands are now firmly established in many schools as a progressive reading framework and a means of evidencing children’s reading progression. At each stage, pupils have a sense of freely choosing books that appeal to their developing reading tastes within a selection that matches their ability, so they are able to get the most enjoyment and a sense of achievement. Using standardized assessments, schools will often measure a child’s reading level several times a year to help them select books that are appropriate for independent reading.
