Volume 2 of Madness B-Sides "I Do Like To B-Side The A-Side", across 11 hit singles from "Driving In My Car" to "(Waiting For) The Ghost. Thirty years of fury, frustration, sexual longing, class angst and observations about girls' skirts was rammed into the grand Brechtian/Brel-like drama of "Live Bed Show", "I Spy" and, of course, "Common People"; and sure enough it has the impact of crashing head-on into someone's entire sordid, suppressed secret life. By that summer Britpop had reached – depending on your point of view – either its apex or nadir, when Blur and Oasis were involved in a chart battle that dominated newspapers and made the BBC’s Six O’Clock News. Different Class (released in Japan as Common People) is the fifth studio album by English rock band Pulp, released on 30 October 1995 by Island Records.

From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener Mis-Shapes and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of Disco 2000 ) to the aching ballad Underwear and the startling sexual menace of I Spy, Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound. Different Class scooped the Mercury Prize in 1996 – triumphing from a field that featured Oasis’ all-conquering Morning Glory and the Manics’ phenomenal comeback LP Everything Must Go. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. A couple of singles from it cracked the UK top 40, but to most people Pulp were just another band of Britpoppers to file beside Cast and Ocean Colour Scene as lower-league attractions operating in the shadow of Oasis and Blur.
