When Jude asks Gerald if she can do the washing up tomorrow, he replies "Only sluts and drunks leave things until tomorrow," while Weeks accuses her mother of looking like a hooker when she dresses up for Gerald the first time he arrives, leading to Jude to ask "What's a hooker? As Kitty unfolds the story of her family’s relationship with her mother’s new boyfriend, there are many memorable episodes, particularly Gerald’s reaction to the untidy state of Kitty’s room, and the outing to protest at the nuclear power station. I felt it would be a good book for young teens who are going through a similar scenario to Kitty, the protagonist. The story is told in a cloakroom cupboard during one morning, with occasional interruptions from Liz and Mrs Lupey. Goggle-Eyes, or My War with Goggle-Eyes in the US, is a children's novel by Anne Fine, published by Hamilton in 1989.

And indeed, by leaving the question of nuclear power yes or no rather open-ended and unanswered in Goggle-Eyes, by having Gerald Faulkner appear as reasonable and that although neither he nor Kitty and her mother end up being converted, that Gerald is still going to be pro nuclear energy and nuclear weapons and Kitty and her mother against this, but that they can nevertheless be friends and even partners, Anne Fine shows with Goggle-Eyes that families can be happy and harmonious even if there are political and philosophical differences encountered, and that everyone in Kitty's new family unit, including herself and Gerald are working hard at the end of the story she tells to Helen in Goggle-Eyes to make things work out. Rigel suggests applying a 5 to 10% Vitamin C serum because Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help with facial lines. I was worried this would be lefty, preachy and patronising book where the author would state her depressing narrative without room for argument or opinion, but I was mistaken. Chronic use of goggles is going to add up over time,” he said, comparing the effects of pressure from goggles and chlorine exposure to the gradual “drip, drip, drip” of a leaky faucet. After imagining various ways to dispose of Gerald (toxic waste, dynamite, machine gunned via the TV, and stuffed on a bonfire just a few from Kitty's imagination) she sets more realistic plans into action, even at one point bribing her young sister Jude (Victoria Shalet) in her campaign, though Jude is happily accepting of Gerald. If you’re practicing starts, tighten them for that and then loosen them back up when you resume regular swim sets.

I remember as a student being in FG03 and seeing Goggle-Eyes on display thinking 'well, the title interests me but not the cover' and so I never picked it up. Kitty isn’t happy with the whole set up and surprise surprise goes out of her way to be cheeky, she even came up with the wonderful nickname ‘goggle eyes’ for her mums’ new boyfriend. But Kitty Killin is not just a brilliant story-teller, she's also the World's Great Expert when it comes to mothers having new and unwelcome boyfriends. Those from split families have a particular affection for the story, and maybe that's because there are no villains in it. Aside from keeping your skin moist, the cream adds elasticity to your skin and enables it to bounce back more quickly after you remove your goggles. It is astonishing that it has never been repeated since it's broadcast, but thankfully it is available to see on Youtube. Like many things in this drama, there is a measured argument on the development on the marshland site, with Rosie despairing of a part of greenland countryside being concreted over, while Gerald argues that it is a deprived area that could benefit from the lesiure centre, as well as the jobs it would provide to locals in the area (this was 1992/93 recession era, remember). Adapted from the 1989 novel by Anne Fine, it begins with pupil Helly Pearson (Alexandra Milman) running distraught from the classroom and her teacher asking Kitty Killin (Honeysuckle Weeks) to go after her.

Goggle-Eyes"' is the nickname Kitty gives Gerald, because of the way he stares ("goggles") at Kitty's mother.

If you're not of a liberal, left wing mindset then you may find yourself agitated by the arguments put forth for CND. Goggle-Eyes was awarded the Carnegie Medal for 1989 [2] and the Guardian Prize in 1990, the two most prestigious British awards for children's literature. Amongst numerous other awards, she is twice winner of both the Carnegie Medal, Britain's most prestigious children's book award, and the Whitbread Award.
