The Canon XL2 features the exclusive XL interchangeable lens-mount system, which enables users to select the most appropriate lens for each individual shooting situation. In addition to exclusive interchangeable video lenses, when outfitted with an optional EF mount adapter, the system also permits the use of a range of Canon EF lenses for EOS 35mm SLR cameras. This Limited Warranty covers all defects encountered in normal use of the Equipment and does not apply in the following cases:

What are the technical specifications of the XL1S digital video (DV) camcorder?

PCM digital sound; 16- bit (48 kHz/2ch); 12 bit (32 kHz/ 2 from 4 ch); 12-bit (32 kHz/4 ch simultaneous) I really don't know anything about this camera except for it's specs which I just looked up via Google. It appears to record interlaced SD video on MiniDV cassettes. That raises several questions in my mind: Resolution, including low light IQ, was the unknown for me. Is a top-line pro-grade SD camera still acceptable, and how does it compare to the dodgy brothers HD cameras I'm using? I read that DV was 704 scan lines (one pixel per scan line), compared to 720 or 1080 for HD.

The Canon XL1S succeeds the XL1, launched in February 1998, which garnered high praise in the market. expireDaysIfYes: typeof mcxPresetParam.expireDaysIfYes === 'number' ? mcxPresetParam.expireDaysIfYes : 30, //days so don't be afraid to ask how long has it run for, remember it's your money and you can only spend it once. unless your in the mafia or run a cuban drugs ring. Long and short of it, I now have a camera that records in sufficiently high definition to allow me to produce decent quality videos. If I make money from this project then I can always upgrade later, but for now my primary mission is to get quality production with the most options available. Read full review Mini DV tapes seem readily available, and a read of Wiki on the subject suggests that quite a lot of commercial work is still recorded to tape. Maybe that's outdated info, given the speed of gear upgrading in the video industry!

So the big Canon is a ten year old door stopper, despite being an impressive bit of engineering. Video is such a throw away world!

Canon XL1S - Pros & Cons

One thing to consider is future-proofing. If you expect this footage to still be relevant 5 or more years from now, think about what might happen if YouTube improves their service. This has happened in the past - they didn't initially offer HD video storage, for example. So if you choose to shoot lower-quality video today based on the fact that it will be posted to YouTube you may come to regret it in the future. I have material I shot on low band U-matic with a Sony DXC M3A some twenty years ago which still looks perfectly acceptable , never mind older stuff shot on 16mm film , so having the latest technology is not an imperative . expireDaysIfNo: typeof mcxPresetParam.expireDaysIfNo === 'number' ? mcxPresetParam.expireDaysIfNo : 30, //days Pity though. It's hard for a stills photographer to view such an impressive bit of kit as junk. No one would toss a 2003 model Hasselblad in the bin! The difference between old pro stills and old pro video, I'm guessing, is that old stills cameras were good, just a bit harder or more expensive to use. Although old digital stills cameras from 2003 are getting obsolete, I guess (think D100). The trade-off between low-light capability and resolution is an interesting one. I can easily imagine low-noise SD footage looking better than noisy HD footage. But that's a function of your camera and the lenses you have, not SD vs. HD. The obvious thing to do is to take your own footage under conditions similar to those you foresee shooting in and then compare them to see which looks better.

But old video wasn't good enough, even then, and to be honest, today's 1080 HD probably isn't quite there yet, either. Otherwise, why would there be such a push to 2.7k and 4k? Yet most stills cameras seem to have settled on around 20mp, and 12mp is plenty for most things. document.cookie = encodeURIComponent(sKey) + "=" + encodeURIComponent(sValue) + sExpires + "; path=/"; Helicopters are an interesting problem because the usual "just use a tripod" simply doesn't apply. Handholding would probably give you a much more stable image than bolting the camera to the airframe. I wonder if some sort of small steadycam rig like a Merlin might work? They can be challenging to master but it seems to me like it could be the right tool for the job (short of one of those gyro-stabilized rigs...). rotary heads, helical scanning system DV system (Consumer digital VCR SD system) Digital component recording I only use imovie to edit and just want to film holidays, my children, family events etc is this any good for me??Thanks Sean, appreciate your advice and time. I find any video a can of worms and don't want to complicate things unnecessarily. var isOpera = (!!window.opr && !!opr.addons) In closing, this camera is typical of Canon!, It's like an old faithful dog bringing your slippers. It just keeps going, it's reliable, well built, good value and aesthetically pleasing and an example of Good! Affordable design. Starting with the basics, the immediate differences are quite apparent i.e it's a shoulder cam, has a much better quality mic than the xm2 or equivalent and has interchangeable lens's.
