Senda, too, mulls over staying single, and in the title-chapter has a fling that seems to be true love, leading him to consider settling down -- only to find that he's been used. It gives good insight into the conditions and life in a rapidly modernizing Japan, during a time of great change, in quite well turned small episodes and stories. In 1980, Joy's young daughter Kate mysteriously flees the family home. Fifteen years later, Kate's own daughter Sabine leaves London in search of grandparents she has never known. When the family is finally reunited, hidden tensions come to the surface, uncovering a dark secret which has been deeply buried for years . . .

The milieu Hanmura describes is a uniform one, even if the cast of characters around them differs from place to place, and they are also unified against the changes constantly encroaching on them -- even if there is only so much they can stem the tide. The dominant theme of The Sheltering Rain is inevitable change, and attempts to maintain the comfortably familiar. Throughout our lifetimes we’ll read a great many books, watch a great many films and hear a great many songs, but most of us find our favourites early on. Best-selling novelist and screenwriter Jojo Moyes is no exception. The only reason I carried on reading was because I'd taken the book on holiday and had nothing else to do that day!

I liked all of the characters in this book and would have enjoyed spending more time with them. I especially would have liked reading more about Joy and Edward's life when they were first married and living in Hong Kong. That portion of the book reminded me of 'The Painted Veil' by M Somerset Maugham. For most of her 76 years, Kathleen Whittier Mostyn has run the only hotel in the sleepy town of Silver Bay, on the east coast of Australia. In recent years, the town’s visitors have mostly been Continue reading » I can still feel the familiar ache just looking at the cover of Sheltering Rain, it's sheer bliss then it isn't. I can never look at it the same way again without feeling lonely. The novel consists of eight quite distinct chapters, as the work resembles a loosely connected story-collection.

Since I often find the plots to be long and terribly slow-moving and the characterization to be both flat and unrealistically glamorous, the family saga is usually one of my least favorite forms of fiction. Sheltering Rain, a debut novel from the United Kingdom, is blessedly different. The focus of the story then shifts to rural Ireland in the late 1990s. Joy is now a grandmother and Sabine, the child of her estranged daughter, has come to stay. Sabine’s mother Kate is coming out of yet another bad relationship and has essentially dumped Sabine at Joy’s farm while she tries to get her life together. Now let’s set that aside. I couldn’t understand why make Sabine go too far with Thom who shares history with her mother. I get that she resented the prospect of a relationship between him and her mom, and a 16 year-old who might have daddy issues is inevitable to crush on older men that are old enough to father her, but that seduction scene? It was awkward, disgusting, and so unnecessary. Also.. whatever happened with Kate’s half brother? You can't just unveil a secret like that and leave us hanging not knowing about it further. It was like a hole in the story.

Here the narrator -- married, with children -- enjoys a brief blast of the past and glimpse of how things went for Komei, but at the end is able to return to his staid domestic arrangement -- a nice way of rounding out the collection. You can't expect everything to be perfect. When you expect too much, you can be disappointed, believe me."

One of the things I loved about this book as with many of the authors novels is that you get a perspective from all three lead characters and a switch in time-lines from the past to the present day. This is such an effective tool in getting to know the characters as a reader and provides explanations for things that have happened which make them the person they are in modern times. I think I loved and got irritated by all three women in equal measures due to the consequences of certain actions in their pasts but I think one of the signs of a good story is that the characters should bring out some raw emotion in the reader. By the end of the novel, we have seen a change in Joy, Kate and Sabine for the better due to their experiences, but I also enjoyed that the author did not try and sugar-coat their lives in that it will be a “happy ever after” for them all, and that there would still be challenges ahead. Sheltering Rain" is not a Romance, not in my estimation, anyway, but, as it turns out, it is a LOVE STORY, a love story of the truest sort. It is a love story of a family, of mothers and daughters, of failed love and love that lasted the test of time. Its a story to teach us about the illusion of "perfect" that we believe we see in others, and a story about finding perfection amongst the broken reality of family life. On the night of the 1953 Coronation ceremony, the expatriate community in Hong Kong has gathered for a celebration party, and while they strain their ears to hear the proceedings on a faulty wireless, Joy, a rebellious 21 year-old, falls in love at first sight. She is engaged within twenty-four hours, but then will not see her fiancé again for a year... In 1980, Joy’s young daughter Kate mysteriously flees the family home. Fifteen years later, Kate’s own daughter Sabine leaves London in search of grandparents she has never known. When the family is finally reunited, hidden tensions come to the surface, uncovering a dark secret which has been deeply buried for years . . .
