Before we start talking about how to apply edge banding, we must establish what exactly edge banding is. Edge bands are usually made out of laminated paper or plastic, or thin wood, and they come in a variety of colors. They can also be found with wood grains, metallic finishes, or even designs like stone tiles. The main function of edge bands is to protect your plywood edge from moisture damage and also to look nice on your wood project. Types Of Edge Banding Before starting the edge banding process, you must prepare everything. At first, make sure the piece of plywood isn’t warped; if it is warping, flatten using a suitable method, then cut to size with a quality cutting tool. After making everything right, begin the edge banding process!

These types of Edge banding are thin enough to bend around complex shapes like rounded edges or curved surfaces. They come in a variety of widths, but the most common ones are 20mm and 25mm wide. You should choose this type when you need types of edge banding that are flexible enough to be bent around complex shapes. It’s capable of producing a 3D effect by printing a pattern under the layer of banding before placing a transparent layer of acrylic on top and is also available in PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate). PMMA is used as a lightweight and shatterproof alternative to glass, and can easily be moulded, coloured, drilled and formed. It is not a hard process. Find the best suitable glue for your plywood and put it on the edge of your plywood. When you are applying glue, make sure that all the area near the edge of your plywood is covered with glue, and do not leave any dry area. Use glue on both edge and edge banding to ensure a good result. The types of edge banding applied with hot-melt glue are cheap types you can find in every DIY store. They’re made from any material with low heat resistance, so it’s best to avoid using them on materials like MDF or plywood if your project is exposed to high temperatures (like outdoor furniture). We use either Edge Mate or Edge Supply. We don’t have a preference between the two. They’ve both applied easily, stained well, and have held up over time. What are you using to cut off the excess edge banding? This is a clothing iron but suitable for edge banding, which involves gluing narrow decorative strips to the edges of wooden panels. This model has 400 tiny steam holes, but these are not large or curved to make any problem with this job’s process.

The WASING Portable dry iron is small, medium-weight, and easy to use. It can be used on all kinds of projects for pressing veneer into the edge. It has a stainless-steel soleplate with an adjustable temperature control dial that allows you to choose your desired temperature setting up to 230 degrees C (446 F). The WASING Lightweight Portable edge banding iron also features a 360-degree swivel cord, which makes it very easy to maneuver around clothing or furniture while you are using it. Your edge banding should be wider than the plywood edge you’re covering. Center up the edge banding on the plywood so that you have an equal overhang on both sides. Have the necessary tools for this DIY project lined up before you start—you’ll save time and frustration. If you keep seeing the term ‘iron-on edging’ and are confused about the difference between this and edge banding, don’t worry. They’re the same thing, it’s just a different way of describing it. Not all edge banding is iron-on, however, iron-on edging is no different to the other forms of edge banding other than the fact you can (as the name suggests!) iron it in place rather than having to glue it.

Required Tools for this Project

There is no such a category for types of iron, but after working 10 years with cabinet projects, I found these 4 categories helpful. This will vary from person to person though this works pretty well for me. That’s up to you. Edge banding is not structural, so it’s not technically necessary. However, I think it’s necessary to accomplish the look we are going for on most projects.

Yes! Edge banding stains really well and should stain very similarly to the rest of your plywood. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure to remove any adhesive that might sneak out the sides. The adhesive doesn’t take stain, so if there is any on the sides, you will have areas that don’t stain. The sanding step will get rid of any excess adhesive. Can edge banding be painted?I already mentioned various types of plywood edge banding. Now I describe one by one how to apply them. But I will only talk about manual process of edge banding. There are some edge bander available at the market those will automatically complete the edge banding process without man power. How to Apply Pre-Glued Edge Banding?
