The illustrations look to be water color or crayon like to make the pages very pleasing and relaxing to read and look through. Her literary awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. The wording and illustration in this book shows how a relationship can be between two women, and how the love for the child can be the same. These books are wonderful additions to any board book collection but they are particularly valuable to a community that is greatly under-represented in children's literature.

Each page is a half bleed and just shows the mom and their child doing something with a white background to show that nothing else matters and it is all about the relationship between the mothers and child. As one review put it, this book “shares the loving bond between same-sex parents and their children. LESLEA NEWMAN is the author of over fifty books, including Heather Has Two Mommies, the first children's book to portray lesbian families in a positive way. So, I think this a great book for children who are beginning to read and to get them familiar with the concept of same-sex parents with out them even realizing it.Now Tricycle Press is taking a chance and producing some quality baby board book fare for the busy single sex family. In this nursery rhyme the author rhymes the last words of a line such as diddle and fiddle, or moon and spoon. Sure, I'd love to see publishers taking a chance and creating more books of this type out there, but the stories really stand on their own merits and deserve to be considered as just great little board books in and of themselves. Similarly, Mommy and Mama make up a believable lesbian couple that doesn't resemble television's vision of what lesbians look like (long-haired models, etc.

The book walks us through a young boys family which consists of two mom's, one that is referred to as mommy and one that is referred to as mama. The language is suitable for young children and the illustration relates to the age group that would most likely be reading it. From hide-and-seek to dress-up, then bath time and a kiss goodnight, there's no limit to what a loving family can do together. This book follows a lot of repetitions and it is very predictable, which makes it a great bedtime book for young readers still learning how to comprehend. Lesléa Newman (born 1955, Brooklyn, NY) is the author of over 50 books including Heather Has Two Mommies, A Letter To Harvey Milk, Writing From The Heart, In Every Laugh a Tear, The Femme Mystique, Still Life with Buddy, Fat Chance and Out of the Closet and Nothing to Wear. If you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of yourself or children in your care, you should always consult an appropriate healthcare professional. She is also the author of many books for adults that deal with lesbian identity, Jewish identity and the intersection and collision between the two.

As we’ve learned, having things rhyme for children makes it more fun for them, and can also help them remember things better. Unlike some older titles, neither mother is attributed in either action or artwork as more "feminine" or "masculine. As a children's librarian I do occasionally have to deal with parents who look at the books I recommend to them and then say, "Do you have anything less . In this sweet board book, the flowing lines and warm palette of Carol Thompson's mixed media illustrations work in concert with Lesléa Newman's rhythmic text. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.Through delightful rhymes and engaging pictures, the book provides a gentle and affirming introduction to different family structures for young readers. Lesléa Newman is the author of 75 books for readers of all ages including the teen novel in verse, OCTOBER MOURNING: A SONG FOR MATTHEW SHEPARD; the middle grade novel, HACHIKO WAITS; the poetry collection, I CARRY MY MOTHER; the short story collection, A LETTER TO HARVEY MILK; and the children's books, A SWEET PASSOVER, THE BOY WHO CRIED FABULOUS, KETZEL, THE CAT WHO COMPOSED, and HEATHER HAS TWO MOMMIES. I especially appreciate the fact that it's a board book, and therefore meant for the very young child, as I cannot think of any other early childhood books in a similar vein. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. They are presented separately on some pages, showing what they help the child with such as reading a story or bathing, but also show the mom's helping the child do things together.

In fact, the gentle rhythm of the words and unfolding of routine would make this an excellent bedtime book – and, handily, it all ends up on a goodnight kiss. I’m pretty sure that LGBT parents will be happy to know that there are bedtime stories that can reflect their family setup. It is wonderful to have a book like this for young children because there is 8 words or less on each page, very easy for children to read on their own.

On the picture book side of things you can sometimes find a sweet story in the midst of all the pabulum ( Mini Mia and her Darling Uncle perhaps), but it's relatively rare.
