I did enjoy this little story and it was nice to hear Galatea’s voice because she doesn’t get a voice in Ovid’s version. Miller holds an MA in Classics from Brown University, studied in the Dramaturgy department at Yale School of Drama, where she focused on the adaptation of classical texts to modern forms, and taught Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare to high school students for over a decade. As a reader you can’t help but feel sorry for Galatea who never had any say on her life from the moment Pygmalion carved her and you can see how she suffers. I loved the authors note at the end which explained her inspiration from Pygmalion - a story referred to by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. We learn that Galatea and her husband have a ten-year-old daughter together, Paphos, who was conceived the first time they were together.

Sure, these are lifeless objects, but Galatea is stuck in an existence where that mindset of her as a lifeless object is still imposed upon her and in reality, the mindset of many abusive partners in the world try to impose these standards on women. Miller’s retelling deals with themes such as personhood, female subjugation, and male pleasure — subjects that were only alluded to in the original. But, unfortunately, the story is very underwhelming and underwritten—a complete 180 from the brilliance that shines in the author’s two novels. The story of Circe's entanglement with Odysseus lasts far beyond the narrative of "The Odyssey," making for compelling material to revisit. I love how independent she is and how she thinks of her daughter before herself, while the sculptor thinks only of himself.

THE MIND-BENDING CULT CLASSIC ABOUT A HOUSE THAT’S LARGER ON THE INSIDE THAN ON THE OUTSIDE • A masterpiece of horror and an astonishingly immersive, maze-like reading experience that redefines the boundaries of a novel.By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file.

Questi sono gli interrogativi dai quali parte Madeleine Miller per costruire il suo racconto denso e disturbante. He literally created her for his every desire, even disliking the fact she has thoughts and opinions. Galatea’s bitterness, pain and rage are palpable as is her resolve to change the trajectory of her life. Strange and with a beauty that could only have come from the gods, her husband kept her hidden inside as much as he could. Madeline Miller, known for her exquisite literary adaptations, delivers yet another exceptional work with "Galatea. In Ovid’s version of the myth, in Metamorphoses (which Miller indicates is “almost solely” her source for this work), she does not have a name. Thanks to an earlier British release date, we have some hints as to how this ploy might go over once “Galatea” is widely available for purchase. The sentiment seems to be what Miller’s publishers are banking on: “Galatea’s” marketing materials include that the short story is “gifty. It is effective as it demonstrates that the themes in the story have been issues for women throughout all of history and linger today.
