Description

When watching SDR content the available modes include Brightest, Sports, Standard, Gaming, Movie and two User defined modes. For HDR we get exactly the same ones but these can be adjusted separately from the ones available for SDR. ViewSonic has added a few features that can help with that and the most obvious is keystone correction. But we would advise against that unless absolutely necessary as keystone correction will surely downgrade the resulting image and also adds latency which any gamer would like to avoid. ViewSonic recommends using High Altitude mode at 4,921 to 9,842 feet. With it on, the fan noise in Eco mode is about the same as in Normal mode with High Altitude mode off. In Normal mode though, it's enough louder that anyone who is bothered by fan noise may want to consider some form of acoustic isolation.

For our real world testing we had connected our PS5 to the projector and used our copy of F1 2021 for a few laps. For the review we used the fidelity mode which outputs at 4K@60Hz. The gameplay was as smooth as butter and as for its responsiveness we could not be any happier from what we saw. Everything registered extremely fast and all our commands would render on screen immediately making this projector ideal for any kind of games you like to play. Motion PerformanceIn addition to the stunningly detailed images that true 4K resolution can offer, the projector also supports HDR and HLG content to produce more dynamic-looking images and bringing flat images to life with more displayable information in the darker and brighter parts of a scene. Overall the PX701-4K looks and feels very ViewSonic. It is not the most premium of quality but considering the price you shouldn’t expect anything fancy. Video Quality Technology used

After setting Brilliant Color to 1, color temperature was 5,692K. Changing the setting for color temperature to 7,500K brought the measurement up to 6,426K, just below the desired 6,500K. Naturally, every projector produces an operating noise due to the cooling function of the ventilation fan. This is specified by the manufacturer in the data sheet in dB (decibels). In Eco mode, the projectors are quieter than in normal operation due to the reduced output. However, the manufacturers' specifications do not always correspond to reality, as there is no standardised measurement procedure for this measurement. Thus, the projectors cannot be compared exactly by the volume specification. As for the lens that is being used, the PX701-4K has a throw ratio of 1.5-1.65. In terms of size the unit can project a 30″ ~ 300″ diagonal image but as we mentioned above the projector is missing any lens shifting and if you combine that with the relatively small 1.1x zoom you don’t have many options when installing it.

The rainbow effect basically occurs with all 1-chip DLP projectors. However, only about one third of all users notice this effect. When images are generated by DLP projectors, a specific colour of the colour wheel is successively projected onto the screen for each pixel and interpreted by the viewer's eye as a respective colour with a specific brightness/intensity. The more segments the colour wheel of a DLP projector has and the faster it rotates or the DLP chip is controlled, the smaller the rainbow effect. A flashing of the colours of the colour wheel (red-green-blue, possibly others) is then perceptible, partly with complete, also still images, partly with moving images, but especially at edges between bright and dark image areas. The effect can also be observed in high-contrast or dark images, or when the image content changes rapidly, e.g. in action films. Viewers who notice this effect report, among other things, from slight headaches to severe headaches and dizziness. The only obvious difference I saw between movies on disc that I viewed in both SDR and HDR versions was lower color accuracy in scenes I'm familiar with—a fully predicable result from my Calman measurements. A dress that should have been bright red in the highway dance scene in La La Land was closer to maroon, for example. But none of the colors was far enough off to notice if you're not familiar with the scene. ViewSonic’s proprietary SuperColor™ Technology displays a wide colour range, ensures that users enjoy a true-to-life colour performance in both bright and dark environments without sacrificing image quality. The lens offset is designed for placement on a flat surface just below the screen or inverted in a ceiling mount just above it, while the 1.1x manual zoom offers some flexibility for positioning. The menus offer up to +/- 40 degree vertical and horizontal keystone correction, corner correction, and even a Warping option, for geometric correction when using a curved surface as a screen.
