John Hegarty, who had worked on the 1990s Boddingtons advertising campaigns, argued that Interbrew, "just didn't care [about the brand], they underinvested and let it rot". There has been renewed interest in the Boddington’s cask-conditioned bitter that was produced in the 1960s to the 1980s. Boddingtons is a refreshing, smooth beer renowned for its golden colour, full-bodied flavour and malty, moreish taste with smooth, tight creamy head. Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons was one of the breweries implicated in the 1900 English beer poisoning epidemic, in which 6,000 people were poisoned by arsenic and 70 died. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street. In spite of its reputation and it being owned by AB InBev, I will try to remain as unbiased as possible.Popular Kenyan Lager since 1922, this beer is clean and refreshing with a white head, crisp and clean aromas with a touch of citrus. Slater Boddington in 1908, the family retained an interest in the company and continued to take a practical hand in its running. Distinctively rich with a touch of smokiness, made from the most exceptional malt and grain whiskies of Scotland.

Pale ale or "bitter" rapidly grew in popularity after the Second World War and overtook mild in sales from the 1950s.Production of the cask-conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city. Boddingtons had been in decline before the Whitbread takeover, and although it retained an almost "cult" following within its Manchester heartland, only 5 per cent of sales were outside the North West. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Perhaps there was no discernible further decline in quality but only 35 from 255 pubs is a pretty miserable proportion — less than 14 per cent. After the acquisition, the company owned 272 public houses, 70 per cent of which were within 20 miles of its Manchester brewery.

A period when the number of Boddingtons’ pubs in the GBG varied between 27 and 35 ending the period 2 higher than at the beginning. In 2000, the Whitbread Beer Company was acquired by the Belgian brewer Interbrew, which owned Stella Artois. We’ve undertaken some light editing for readability and house style but otherwise this is John’s own work. The conventional wisdom seems to be that it was the early 80s when Boddies first took a big leap down – looking at the history it seems to coincide with the Oldham acquisition but also the start of distribution down South. Our latest book is Balmy Nectar, a collection of the best of our writing from here on the blog and across various magazines since 2012. But oddly the lack of body (combined with rather tentative nitro) brings the modest bitter finish into greater prominence - which for me makes it beat the Pub Ale.

This number grew rapidly over the next three years to 79, the height of Boddington’s popularity, with 31 per cent of their tied house estate represented. In 2012 it ceased to exist completely in cask form although there appear to be two versions still available in keg/can form. Was that Strangeways in the 1990s or was it keg/smallpack Boddies brewed at Magor/Samlesbury/Wellpark after Strangeways was closed? Concerns regarding quality control meant that the brewery had been reluctant to extend distribution outside its heartland. Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. Appearance: Clear beer with a thick white head, golden but a little darker than average lager for example.
