Description

Do you want to drill tiny holes in your miniature gun barrels so they look like they could fire miniature bullets? Want to experiment with pinning hard-to-fix pieces in place when building and converting your miniatures? A reliable drill suitable for use on miniatures can be used in all manner of ways, and the Citadel Tools design team were eager to take on the challenge of redesigning the hobby drill to make it easier and safer to use by incorporating a number of design features: When compared to the market it is undeserving of the title “super”, in comparison to the older Fine Detail Cutters, they are finer in comparison. But there are so many other, now cheaper, options out there which are astronomically finer than these.

The most common thing we all drill (Space Marine Gun Barrels) it makes sense to drill the side holes with one diameter drill bit and the front of the barrels with a slightly larger drill bit. It’s a subtle change, but one that makes it appear just slightly more real. So I squoose them as hard as I could, and guess what, I noticeably blunted the blade which I could feel by running my finger over them. (crossways not lengthways, don’t try this yourself unless you clearly understand how a blade works!)Personally, Other than reviewing it, I never use these, I much prefer a hobby knife for doing everything this can – and the next stage of cleanup too. Citadel Tools: Knife Review GW was kind enough to send over a set of all four for review, so I’ve given them all a whirl. I’ll get into each in detail in a second but right off the bat there are no weird gotchas. They all do what they say on the box and they do them to various degrees of good. The clippers clip, the remover removes, the knife slices, and the drill puts small holes in things. Super Fine Detail Sprue Cutters

The best part of these, however, is that the shank (the bit your drill holds) is a standard size. so long as you get a Pin Vise which holds 3.2mm drill bits, which is the standard shank diameter for PCB Drill Bits. An additional note, they also do not sell replacement blades. So for reference, you need a size-11 Model Blade. (not a scalpel blade they have a different profile and won’t fit.Whilst I’m referencing that, I also want to draw attention to “ Bump-stopping design makes it impossible to mash the blades together with too much pressure, which means they’ll stay sharp for longer“ This can be annoying if you are often swapping between drill bits which require a different collet. The Best Drill Bits for Models, 3D Prints & Miniatures Otherwise, it is a lot of plastic for a lot of money. 6 blades of decent quality are included and the knife is compatible with other brands’ scalpel blades as well. Much like the new Painting handle, the 2022 refresh of Citadel’s Tool choice represents an overt cheapening of their Hobby Tool range with only a slight improvement to function – see there is some positive improvement here.

The new notch for cleaning bases sure does exist, though I’m not sure how useful it will actually be. The flat side of the blade does just fine at cleaning bases so I don’t know who was crying out for this feature but it’s there so you can use it if you want. Finally we have the new Clippers. These are a fantastic bit of kit and the spring mechanism feels much better on these and is inside the joint. With more weight and a pinpoint tip it makes clipping those hard to reach pieces much easier which when working with resin and its kin can be frustrating at the best of times. The blades are designed to shear the plastic now meaning that we fire less projectile plastic at friends and family who are unfortunate to be sitting in the close proximity. These feel great to use and should stand the test of time. 5/5 on these as the old ones were not bad but these have taken steps to reduce the scarring on models, increasing precision and try to stop us having to get the hoover out after we have put together a plastic kit. Another 5/5. The sharpness is average, the cuts are alright, but I found it difficult to get really close to the components, so there was still a lot of excess plastic I had to cut away. That’s probably because the blades are still rather large, which makes it hard to reach tight areas in a sprue. Still, the build quality is pretty decent, but for the price they’re asking, I would probably invest in a pair of single-blade nippers. Dual vs single-bladeThe new version is improved by its much thinner nose, I always found the old model cumbersome and for finer parts, you could not even get this into the details. Now we can get into much finer parts with the new tool and that is a huge blessing.

Honestly, and I do not say this lightly. This needs redesigning asap. It’s unusable. 2022 Refreshed Citadel Tools – Final Thoughts The rubbery shell is an addition to comfort. The rounded body has a comfortable girth to be held for hours. (grow up) and less to a flat part at the tip so that you can pinch it snugly between your fingers. (seriously, grow up)

This week’s Sunday Preview was full of Warhammer goodies – including the brand new Kill Team: Shadowvaults – but many hobbyists have had their interest piqued by the mention of four new and updated Citadel tools.
