But even with Turton’s methodical unfurling of the novel’s layers, the core mystery of The Devil and the Dark Water is virtually unsolvable. Believe me — from my armchair, I tried. I tried hard. And while I did manage to snap into place one extremely important aspect of the plot, I had to eventually accept the fact that I would come no closer to the solution.

And then there’s Borden. He’s described as a sort of demigod, a supernatural figure. Now I do appreciate that we’re perceiving borden from Carver’s perspective, but the “elevated” language in which he’s consistently presented becomes rather over the top. I found their relationship, and Hiram’s dissection of it, truly gripping. Almost romantic, in a dark way. And upon finishing the book, these two men remain in my mind. As if they’re still sitting on a boat, with a fishing net between them. A lasting impression, indeed – and further proof of this book’s well-sculpted characters. Electrified" Written by Mike Gallagher and Marc Ferrari Performed by Mike Gallagher Courtesy of Marc Ferrari/MasterSourceTurton also never overwhelms the reader with the intricacy of the plot. His writing has a skillful ease to it and is lovely to read. Ever so gently, he carries the reader along as he slowly reveals the interconnectedness of the mystery’s pieces, leaving not even a ghost of a plot hole. And for fun, he throws in plenty of what I call “mini twists” – small, unexpected surprises that work well to maintain a high level of engagement and interest in the story. What a great sequel to A Line On The Water! A quality read, very nicely laid-out and laced with great photos.” DAVE IVEY Once they set sail, unexplainable atrocities begin happening on board of the Sardaam. A dead man stalks the ship, haunted symbols draw themselves on the walls, and mysterious slaughters begin unfolding.

My signature touch is not reading an author's debut novel and requesting arcs of their newest release. The start of Dark Water is also difficult. I nearly gave up. I like to give at least three stars and this was not rising up to that. I persisted, and was then rewarded. Indeed I enjoyed the middle of the book and towards the end of it I even considered staying up to finish it. I began to exist on intimate terms with all that is pitiful, misshapen, and unresolved in the human heart

Toward the ending things take a chaotic turn. There are a few twists, most of which I'd predicted (not bragging, I have merely read enough mystery novels to know how certain stories will unfold). The novel's main twist was painfully clichéd and made very little sense (it was obsolete).

FSI International, now TEL FSI and Chaska, Minnesota. The merger concluded during the Teflon Lawsuit. In this maritime mystery, our dear doctor Watson became our bodyguard Hayes, a broad-shouldered man who had to solve an impossible mystery and tried to protect our handsome and witty detective Pipps, who was somehow in chains. Incidentally, we must keep "eating" even after finding our soulmate - by controlling our fetus to "eat" our one true love. The " Battle of the sexes" (ver. womb) takes place almost as soon as a human fetus is formed in the mother's body. A fetus receives its nutrients from its mother through the blood vessels of the placenta. The larger the blood vessels of the placenta, the more nutrients a fetus will receive. So it's not surprising that the linked study found that: "... the father’s gene drives the fetus’s demands for larger blood vessels and more nutrients, while the mother’s gene in the placenta tries to control how much nourishment she provides. There’s a tug-of-war taking place, a battle of the sexes at the level of the genome." If the mother's gene didn't work, the "father" would have let the fetus drain the mother dry; if the father's gene didn't work, the "mother" would have killed the fetus because it refused to "eat." This is just one (depressing) piece of knowledge I can't refuse to share - I really find Dark Water's eating analogy so unbelievably accurate.) All of the characters were so interesting. Anyone could have been the baddie. I had no clue who to suspect!I agree with the user comment above in regard to the fact that teenagers will not appreciate this film. I kept telling myself as I was watching it, that it is not a movie that kids will understand. I shouldn't say 'all' kids, but probably most. Ironically, this is a movie that kids should see because they can learn about elements that a good movie usually contains: developed characters, a good plot, and excellent acting, to name a few. Not to mention that the movie gives the viewer a lot to think about and is an expertly crafted piece of psychological suspense. I love a period setting and being on a boat at sea in the 1600s staring down the barrel of many months of journeying with murderous characters on board made for a fun read heading into the spooky season 🙃 The year is 1634. Samuel Pipps, the world’s greatest detective, is imprisoned on a ship bound for Amsterdam, where he will be tried and executed for an unknown crime upon his arrival. Also on the ship is Arent Hayes, Sammy’s friend and personal bodyguard, and Sara Wessel, a high-ranking noblewoman with a secret plan of her own. Mad? I wanted to shout. Aren’t you mad? And you? Aren’t I? We’re all mad. Here we are, piloting a wood-shaving over an abyss. Is there a better definition of madness?”
