Before starting serialization, Junji Ito had a discussion with his editor over the main theme of the story. They eventually settled on making a more character-driven narrative, since it was something that Ito had not tried much in the past. Upon starting the series, Ito did not have a specific idea for its ending, often just piecing the story together as it went, following along with the characters. [2] Ito would often find this approach resulting in unexpected ideas helping to drive the story forward. [2] Publication [ edit ] In the climax, only Dr. Kurodera and Wataro survive the mass meditation while the other people who helped Kyoko are reduced to skeletons. Why did you think eating a certain food would make your teacher mad at you?” Brown asked. “I didn’t eat ochazuke very often in the morning,” Ito replied, “and it just happened that the morning I did, I got in trouble with my teacher. That happened once and it turned into a jinx.” Sensor is the latest horror manga by Junji Ito and one of his best, a sprawling, meandering serialized story that unites many of his usual themes to create a saga of cosmic horror and existential dread. "Sensor" by Junji Ito cover art courtesy of Viz Media Junji Ito: "And the cult wants to obtain the information in the cloud, but the girl with the golden volcanic hair warns against it. And the cloud turns into brains and eyes and stuff and falls from the sky and squishes the cult. And the reporter gets away but is haunted by this event."

A lot of it was so absurd, it was almost like a South Park parody. The unkillable cult leader who uses meditation as if it were like NORAD’s DEFCON countdown, the insane plan to crash cars into every traffic mirror in the country, covering them with the angel hairs, to create a spy network for… reasons?? One scene involves giant brains crushing everyone that looked so silly, it was like the giant foot coming down at the end of the Monty Python opener! Que dois-je faire. Je ne vois partout qu’obscurités. Croirai-je que je ne suis rien ? Croirai-je que je suis dieu ?' EditSynopsis Kyoko Byakuya walks alone at the foot of Mount Sengoku, mysteriously drawn to the place. She notices something odd about the area: the volcanic hair bears a gold appearance, uncommon in Japan. Kyoko soon runs into a strange man named Aizawa, who proclaims he has been expecting her. a b c Davidson, Danica (August 25, 2021). "Junji Ito's Sensor Is a Creepy Horror Manga with Sci-Fi Mixed In". Kyoko Byakuya discovers a village at the foot of Mount Sengoku, an old volcano that hasn't been active in a long time. The volcano has produced golden hair-like fibers, more human than geological, and the villagers worship the hair as a blessing. The hair, which they call amagami, gives them blissful extrasensory powers, but the volcano erupts, giving them a vision of a dark god, and Kyoko Byakuya is the only survivor, her hair transformed into amagami. Strangely, the village has been destroyed for more than sixty years... The artwork is suitably fascinating, bringing into visual life the unfathomable horrors of space (also oceans because twinsies). He encourages the creepy dread of looking up at the sky only to find disturbing visions of deep space monstrosities and the incomprehensible knowledge that we as a planet are just one infinitesimal grain of sand on the Universe's beach.

I would be remiss to not bring up your recent win at the Eisner Awards for Best Writer/Artist. It’s quite monumental because the award has never been given to a mangaka, and in the western comics industry the Eisners are a huge deal. Do you read many North American or European comics? In October 2020, Viz Media announced they licensed the series for English publication. [6] They released the volume on August 17, 2021. [7] Reception [ edit ] Critical response [ edit ] Eldritch Abomination: A horrifying entity is glimpsed in a vision right before the town at the base of the mountain is destroyed. It's actually the cult leader Kagero Aido himself after he ascended to become some sort of dark deity.it made sense in the end when he made a note of how he went in with one thought about Kyoko being the narrator but left differently. I liked her but she wasn’t as fleshed out. I love Beniko. I think she could be one of his most interesting antagonists if he built her out. The one jumps are with her in the mirror was one of the best scares of the manga. But I didn’t know why she was stalking him or anything so sadly she wasn’t as great as she could’ve been. Ito’s afterword (that he says he had to write - this entire book feels like he’s just filling space/meeting his obligations, rather than doing something he really wants) is quite revealing. He mentions that he started with a rough structure and then abandoned it to basically freestyle the rest of the book. And it shows! It’s almost like he knows it’s a shambles and he’s apologising for how it turned out - “this is really the result of the bus driving away before everyone is on board.”

Interest Stacks

While thinking of ideas for the book, Ito eventually settled on making a more character-driven narrative, since he had not tried doing one much before. While working on the book, Ito did not know how the story would end, instead opting to piece together the story while following the characters.
