Although the large southern Hebridean island of Jura has always been sparsely populated, it has a fascinating distilling heritage. In the 18th century,it was reported that islanders made spirit from rowan berries, as well as using the bitter fruit to acidulate their whisky punch. Lots of people attributed it to the Jura Superstition.

Superstition is a unique whisky created from the marriage of bold, strong peated barley offering evocative smoke and heady malt that you’d expect from an older Jura and a selection stylishly warm and delicately aged malts contributing a sweet, creamy oaty goodness with hints of honey and spice on the tail. Read as a neutral statement, that essentially encapsulates the flavor profile of Superstition, a mildly sweet Scotch with a touch of peat smoke and some notes of tropical and earthy spices – pleasant and mildly interesting but not extraordinary. Combining two styles of whisky is a fairly unorthodox approach, but one that we know is right for Jura. We can’t wait for people to try and it and see for themselves.’

A hint of citrus creeps in as the peat fades, along with sweet Key lime. Pleasant.

Built in 1963, Jura is the only distillery in operation on the Hebridean island. Despite the island being rich in peat, the distillery only peated a couple of its whiskies very lightly –Supersition which launched in 2002, and Prophecy which launched in 2009. Origin" – a ten-year-old whisky, a non-peated malt having a "heather honey" finish [ citation needed] Isle of Jura Superstition Single Malt Scotch Whisky is crafted from 13% peated barley (the barley is peated to 40 phenol ppm) and 87% unpeated barley. Once the whisky has been distilled, it is matured up to 21 years in American oak casks that were previously used to mature bourbon. The whisky has a subtle aroma of smoke, olives, marzipan and marinated beef. The whisky gives way to notes of cloves, cinnamon, nuts, heather and peat on the palate, and finishes with a warming touch of honey and cedar. The core range will also be complemented by a new line-up in global travel retail, which was announced in October last year. Drag the most hard‐bitten supermarket buyer to this remote corner of the Inner Hebrides and it’s job done for Beeston and her team. Once the buyer has given up on their futile quest for mobile reception or Wi‐Fi, they will succumb to this magical isle. In the capital, Craighouse, dubbed ‘downtown Jura’, you will find all you need, as she explains: “The pier is just a stone’s throw from the distillery. The pub and hotel are across the road, and the shop is two doors down.”

In the US, the focus is on distributor E&J Gallo. “We need to build awareness of the story, and we need to build belief and confidence in the brand,” she says. “For the past two years we’ve brought 150 of our US colleagues to Jura in May and June.” At which point it’s job done, like the cynical buyer we met earlier, and the same goes for the 8,000 tourists who visit the distillery each year. “Once there you can’t help but take it to your heart,” says Beeston, who fell under its spell eight years ago while working for Bowmore. The finest whiskies up to 21 year go into this mysterious bottle. This is matured in ex-Bourbon casks and is a lightly peated malt with hints of smoke. Superstition consists of 13 per cent heavily peated malt and this ingredient delivers this delicious, creamy, lightly peated whisky! The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900, it was again in disuse and dismantled. In the 1950s two local estate owners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, keen to revive the local economy, had the distillery rebuilt and expanded by the architects Lothian, Barclay, Jarvis & Boys with input from whisky and distillery expert William Delmé-Evans. [1] [2] Extremely unget-at-able" was how George Orwell described the location of the Isle of Jura in 1946; the island remains difficult to reach today. Most travelers to Jura go by Caledonian MacBrayne car ferry from Kennacraig on the Kintyre Peninsula to Islay, and then cross to Jura from Port Askaig on Islay by the MV Eilean Dhiura, a small vehicle ferry which is run by ASP Ships on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council. Islay can also be reached by air: Islay Airport is served by daily flights from Glasgow. From March to October there is also a passenger ferry from Tayvallich on the west coast of Scotland. [9] Brand ambassadors [ edit ]Willie Tait is one of two brand ambassadors. He began working at the distillery in 1975, and worked as a tunroom man, mash, stillman under manager, distillery manager and master distiller, before taking the role of brand ambassador. [ when?] In 2011 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from Malt Advocate magazine. [10] With Water: A few drops of water temper the peat, releasing notes of salted caramel and vanilla. The same notes appear on the tongue, improving the overall balance of the malt (unless you just love seaweed).
