The journey towards “family of V-Tex” products is already underway having used the successes of the project as justification for further investment outside of the project. It’s best to use sterile tongs to handle teats afterwards to prevent contamination, and the majority of sterilisers come with a pair – put the tongs in with the cycle and you know they’re OK to use. However the ultimate attainment of such a fast cooling rate was based on careful optimisation; the development resulted in a number of inventive steps which have now been patented.

An earlier prototype demonstrated the potential to cool cans rapidly and was able to make a significant improvement on the original target specification.

Lightweight, portable and wipe-clean, the steriliser just needs to be plugged in and it's ready to work its magic. My baby has 6oz of formula currently so I boil the kettle, fill a bottle up to 6oz mark with water, pour 4/5 oz of that water into the rapid cool (leaving an oz or so behind in the bottle), add the formula scoops to the bottle and swirl together with the hot water, then when the rapid cool has cooled the water, I add that into the bottle and swirl around - I always check the temperature on my wrist but it’s always fine using this method!

On the downside, the heating plate will almost certainly attract limescale over time so the steriliser will need descaling once or twice a month. Just pour hot boiled water into the RapidCool flask, add powdered formula, put on the digital lid and shake for a few seconds, then allow it to work its magic for 2-5 minutes (depending on the amount of formula in the flask). This was based not only on the performance results obtained but on observation of the anticipated operation of the commercial system from a user perspective.
