we live in a world ruled by fictions of every kind - mass-merchandizing, advertising, politics conducted as a branch of advertising, the pre-empting of any original response to experience by the television screen. Crash', is about Ballard, who is turned on by car crashes, as he meets various people: Vaughn, (a man who fuses technology is sex), while the characters over-indulge in behaviour that makes it an uncomfortable read. When Ballard, our narrator, smashes his car into another and watches a man die in front of him, he finds himself drawn with increasing intensity to the mangled impacts of car crashes. In the light of this, perhaps his detached, unfaltering attitude to bodily functions, disease, damage, obsession and general human mess is understandable.

A prude I am not, but I do have an aversion to an apparent revelling in blood and guts and feces and brain matter and semen that goes well beyond the amount required to make the thematic point.

This combined with the inarticulate nature of 'modern' speech often means that it is very hard to praise a work (such as this) because the lexicon we once reserved for greatness and the expression thereof, no longer retains any power, certainly not the power one wishes to convey in this instance. I was checking the map and looked up just as a deer stepped out into the road in front of me as casually as if he were John Steed going for a walk in a London park lacking only the hat and a fine walking stick. Yet, despite the injuries inflicted, they do not have this burning desire that helps man compose a consistently successful future. He revisits his favorite subject, how modern technology affects people and their sex life, in Crash. Aside from the considerable political fallout from this, a more everyday result of this was that people in the USA were understandably more jittery than usual about air travel and an increasing number turned to travel by road instead.

So great was Coppola's distaste for the film that, according to Cronenberg, Coppola refused to personally present the award to the director. An academic study of the controversy and audience responses to it, written by Martin Barker, Jane Arthurs and Ramaswami Harindranath, was published by Wallflower Press in 2001, entitled The Crash Controversy: Censorship Campaigns and Film Reception. a b Canton, James; Cleary, Helen; Kramer, Ann; Laxby, Robin; Loxley, Diana; Ripley, Esther; Todd, Megan; Shaghar, Hila; Valente, Alex; et al.

Ballard certainly added an extra kink to the perversity of this novel when he elected to give the narrator his own name. In this magic pool, lifting from her throat like a rare discharge of fluid from the mouth of a remote and mysterious shrine, I saw my own reflection, a mirror of blood, semen and vomit, distilled from a mouth whose contours only a few minutes before had drawn steadily against my penis. The film was an international co-production between the British company Recorded Picture Company, and Canadian companies Alliance Communications Corporation, The Movie Network, and Telefilm Canada.Though I do wonder if this book left behind a few nuggets of unhealthy desires in the corners of my brain.

Options multiply around us, and we live in an almost infantile world where any demand, any possibility, whether for life-styles, travel, sexual roles and identities, can be satisfied instantly.

He dreamed of ambassadorial limousines crashing into jack-knifing butane tankers, of taxis filled with celebrating children colliding head-on below the bright display windows of deserted supermarkets.
