Description

The hot composting method, known as the Berkeley method, developed by the University of California, Berkley, is a fast, efficient, high-temperature, composting technique which will produce high quality compost in only 18 days. Materials such as wood and leaves are high in lignin, which is difficult to compost, especially when this material is large in size. If you have a bucket of compost ingredients, consider roughly chopping it up with a pair of garden shears.

The problem is that cold composting does nothing to kill any plant pathogens, dangerous insects, or weed shoots or seeds. This creates a fine-textured mix that heats up fast, with high compost heat going almost all the way out to the edges of the bin. Water the top of the pile, then continue alternating green and brown layers, adding a little soil or active compost between layers, and watering them as you build the pile. For us, composting isn’t a buzzword or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fad – it’s a powerful way to protect our environment, reduce landfill volumes and create a valuable end-product.The equipment is not only helping the school save on expensive off-site waste disposal costs, but they’re creating a compost resource that’s used across the site’s sports fields too. The cost is high in comparison to the amount of waste it can process and the subsequent amount of compost produced. As an simple guideline, if a person can put their arm into the compost up to the elbow, then it is not at 50 degrees Celsius, and is not hot enough. Our food waste solutions can be found in many locations around the world, across a wide range of sectors – including education, hospitality, oil and gas exploration, prison services, and offshore, to name a few.

The shattered organic waste residue after disintegration is transport to the decomposing system by suction blast. While composting requires long time and big space for natural decomposition by microbial, the Composting-free Technology can speed up the entire process by applying enzyme. Fully automated, the bio-reactors’ integrated microprocessor creates the ideal environment for aerobic composting of organic waste and bio-compostable resins and materials. However, while this bin is clearly solidly made and the product of a carefully thought-out design, there are drawbacks. In all composting, including the Berkeley hot composting method, the ratio of carbon to nitrogen in the compost materials needs to be between 25 to 30 parts carbon to one-part nitrogen by weight.By using the enzyme produced by micro-organism, the organic waste can be converted into organic fertilizer in just 3 hours while saving costly labor, reducing wastewater and odor generation.

Some compost bins, such as the Green Johanna and its winter jacket, have specially made compost duvets.Getting the moisture ratio right Shredded paper helps soak up excess water, but can take quite a while to break-down. The accepted way, at least by professional gardeners, for coping with the continuous generation of garden waste is to have 3 separate compost heaps. For example, using this method we could use 1/3 Manure and 2/3 dry carbon materials to start a hot compost pile and it will work. Remember, composting is an art as much as a science, and one of the best ways to learn is to experiment. With static pile composting, you add a slightly thicker green layer when the pile is built up one-third of the way, and again at the 2/3 mark. However, insulated bins such as the Hot Bin enable you to achieve rapid composting (30 to 90 days) with smaller amounts of compost material. They were given the required type of waste and similar bins were given the same mix of waste at the same time. TIP: If it gets too hot and smelly and goes down in size, it has too much nitrogen, need to slow it down, throw in a handful of sawdust per pitchfork when turning. It can be sped up by turning the compost, that is, moving around the material at the bottom of the heap to the top and vice versa to mix it up and get more oxygen in there, but it’s still a long wait.
