Description

Antoine Amédée Peychaud is credited with bringing his family’s bitters recipe all the way from San Domingo (now Haiti) to his new home in New Orleans. There are a few different versions of the story out there, but many believe it was Peychaud’s son, also named Antoine, who would go on to popularize the namesake tincture at his French Quarter apothecary beginning in 1838. While this substitution can be hard to find in stores, it is readily available online. Non-Alcoholic Substitutions For Peychaud’s Bitters Another difference between the two brands is the amount of alcohol. While Angostura contains around 44.7% ABV, Peychaud's bitters have a significantly lower amount of alcohol (35% ABV).

Choosing the best substitute largely depends on the drink you’re making. Some substitutes, like Balsam and Angostura, are more bitter and work best with neutral spirits. Additionally, Old Forester adds hints of Quassia, rose, and cardamom for undertones of toasted spice. Just a few drops with soda or plain water will infuse the aromatics and help your digestion along. Drink a glass of bitters with a meal to help your body digest and metabolize the food better. Like Peychaud’s, Moxie uses gentian root extract as a core ingredient, giving it a distinctively bitter taste. While slightly less aromatic than Peychaud’s Bitters, undertones of bitter orange and honey make this substitute great for Old Fashions. And two of the most popular brands have been dominating the market for ages: Peychaud's and Angostura Bitters. The most popular types of bitters are Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, and orange bitters. But you can find lots of other flavors! Fee Brothers has a line of bitters that includes flavors like Celery, Grapefruit, Chocolate, Peach, Lemon, Cherry, Rhubarb, Plum, and Mint. How much is a dash of bitters?

Peychaud's Bitters was first created in the 1830s by a New Orleans apothecary named Antoine Peychaud. The Lady Chesdin— Gin, Dry vermouth, Orange bitters, Peychaud's Bitters, Bitters, Celery bitters, Cucumber, Onion, Sugar cube, LimeIf you’re looking for something a little more refreshing, you might want to try the New Orleans Fizz. This drink is made with bourbon, lemon juice, sugar, and egg whites, and it’s perfect for a hot day. Also a fixture in storied classics, Angostura is muddled with a sugar cube in the Old Fashioned or combined with rye and sweet vermouth in a Manhattan. Two or three dashes of Angostura elegantly grace a Pisco Sour’s frothy head, and in a spicy Angostura Sour, it’s the only spirituous addition.
