Pirate Militia are most susceptible, as they are enslaved Pirate criminals who are forced to feed on the poisonous vermin, and when infected, they became violently ill, and are said to have a case of "the scritters". Each color of critter follows a specific schedule - only appearing during certain times on specific days of the week. Sundays are the best day for critter variety, as almost all color variants have a chance to spawn in either the morning or afternoon. Some rare critter colors only spawn on one specific day of the week for a window of only six hours.

You have to set it as your companion first, which means taming them and then setting them as a companion from the wardrobe menu. Once you've done that, you can approach them and press A to pet them.
